This is an amusing medieval romance with a late suspense that seems apropos with the changing personalities and relationship between the lead couple. The story line focuses on the Brat trying to demonstrate to her new husband that there is much more substance to her than just being a spoiled royal ward. Lynsay Sands is in top form with this humorous fourteenth century taming of the shrew’s husband. (Harriet Klausner)

Nel 1351, tutto dall'aiuto ai consiglieri più vicini ed i membri della famiglia di Edward III sanno che la ricca ereditiera Lady Murie è la marmocchia più rovinata della monarchia. Così quando Lord Gaynor decide che ha bisogno di uno sposa ricca, considera Murie, ma i suoi migliori amici supplicano con Sir Balan di riconsiderare la cosa. Re Edward rovina la sua pupilla ulteriormente quando permette che lei scelga il marito. Lei sceglie Sir Balan perché sa che è una persona gentile e altruista. Si sposano immediatamente sotto la bandiera di una benedizione reale. Murie pensa di dimostrare che c'è più sostanza in lei che essere solo la rinomato marmocchia. Sa che la sua gente soffre duramente per la peste così si assicura che tutti ricevano un sostentamento. Murie dimostra il suo valore ed il suo amore quando rischia la sua vita per impedire che un assassino uccida il suo amato sposo. Questo è un romance medioevale divertente con una suspense in ritardato che sembra fatta a posta con le personalità ed il rapporto mutevole fra la coppia protagonista. La trama si concentra sulla Marmocchia che prova a dimostrare al suo nuovo marito che c'è molto più sostanza a lei che essere solo una rovinata protetta reale. Lynsay Sands è nella forma migliore con questo divertente racconto su come addomesticare il marito della bisbetica nel quattordicesimo secolo. (Harriet Klausner)

La gentildonna accetta volentieri, ma sin dal suo arrivo a casa delgi zìì è chiaro che l’intraprendente e intelligentissima Sophy è perfettamente in grado di prendersi cura non solo di sé stessa ma anche degli altri, la sua attività preferita.

E a Ombersley Park i problemi sono molti:la giovane Cecilia che rifiuta di sposare l’innamorato Lord Chalbury perché invaghitasi di un poetuncolo, il giovane Hubert nei guai a causa dei debiti contratti con un usuraio…il tutto ricade sulle spalle di Charles, il figlio maggiore, fidanzato con l’insopportabile signorina Wraxton, che oberato dalle gravi responsabilità reagisce stizzito alle intromissioni della stravagante quanto affascinante cugina.Ma Sophy sa prendersi cura anche dei suoi affari, oltre che di quelli degli altri…

E finalmente, dopo tanto averne sentito parlare e aver avuto i più disparati consigli a destra e a manca, ho letto un romanzo della celeberrima Georgette Heyer!

Dopo tante lodi sperticate, devo dire che le aspettative erano sicuramente piuttosto alte, e non sono rimasta delusa:l’autrice scrive con uno stile che ricorda molto quello di Jane Austen, ironico e frizzante.In questo particolare romanzo ho notato che la protagonista, Sophy, ricorda molto Emma ( la protagonista dell’omonimo romanzo della Austen), solo un poco meno ingenua e presuntuosa; come la sua celebre antenata,il suo passatempo preferito è ficcare il naso negli affari degli altri, ma non per curiosità bensì perché ci sono talmente tanti guai che qualcuno dovrà pur risolverli…e lei ama appunto questo:aiutare gli altri a risolvere i loro guai.E così la vediamo all’opera con i cugini,la cui finora tranquilla esistenza in realtà nasconde profonde incomprensione e inquietudini, sintomo a volte di scarsa fiducia tra essi.E Sophy capisce tutto e riporta la pace,imperturbabile davanti ai rimproveri del cugino Charles, un giovane che inzialmente sembra perfino “ingessato”nel suo ruolo di capofamiglia;poi pian piano sotto alla sua scorza seria e impassibile scopriamo un animo aperto e generoso,reso apparentemente severo dalle dure responsabilità di cui è gravato;la ventata di freschezza e gioia nella sua vita la porta proprio l’ultima persona che avrebbe immaginato, cioè Sophy.I duetti tra i due, con lei ironica e fintamente ingenua e lui serioso e brontolone, sono la cosa più godibile del romanzo, che comunque ha molte altri momenti divertenti:come non ridere per esempio, tutte le volte che appare inscena il poetuncolo Augustus, che vive in una realtà tutta sua e si aggrega entusiasta alle iniziative altrui, senza capire mai che lo considerano di troppo?O leggendo delle ansie di cui è preda la povera Lady Ombersley per ogni mossa di figli e nipote?E come non rimanere ammirati dall’intelligenza e arguzia di Sophy?

Insomma un romanzo divertente e godibilissimo, scritto in modo elegante e scorrevole.Da non perdere!
