Attenzione però, lasciate perdere le banalità, ad esempio, parole straniere scritte con errori ortografici etc: cerchiamo i VERI errori, insomma l’equivalente di un centurione romano con lo Swatch al polso, chiaro ? Qui non si scherza, ragazze: si sbaglia sul serio !

SWEET, SWEET MIDDLE AGES…

In “Wild Wind” by  Patricia Ryan, set in the Normandy (France), 1073, we read the description of a splendid banquet:

“The banquet’s fourteenth course, in honor of the new knights, was a giant warhorse sculpted of marzipan and spun sugar, which servants paraded between the rows of tables while myriad jugglers tossed lit torches into the air.” ( page 33 of the US edition ).

Unfortunately this banquet is just “a little bit” early… 200 or 300 years, more or less.

Marzipan and spun sugar are both based upon the same ingredient: sugar. But sugar cane in the Middle Ages was grown only by the Arabs, so that sugar was only discovered by western Europeans as a result of the Crusades -and the first Crusade was started in 1096, therefore after miss Ryan’s book events.

Crusaders returning home talked of this "new Oriental spice" and how pleasant it was. But at the beginning, given its expensive nature (it arrived in Europe from the Orient only through caravans, after months and months of journey), sugar was a luxury exotic product, reserved almost exclusively to the King’s court, sold by apothecaries and often assumed to be medicinal. Many of the medical guides of the 13th through 15th centuries recommend giving sugar to invalids to bolster their strength and as a remedy against impotence (!). When used for cooking, sugar was treated only as a spice, like saffron, in minimal quantities and mainly for seasoning meats.

The situation changed only 200 years later: Marco Polo mentions that Venice was importing by ship refined sugar in the 13th century; by the 15th the city was doing its own refining, and thus sugar became more available throughout Italy. At the same time, sugar cane started being cultivated in Sicily and Spain, and this made sugar price drop and, of course, modern patisserie start !

Well, let’s put things this way: life in the Middle Ages, with no sugar and no sweets, should have been really awful, but at least perhaps there was less need for dental treatments… ^_^

QUANT’ERA DOLCE IL MEDIOEVO…

Nel romanzo “Wild Wind” di  Patricia Ryan, edito in Italia come "Vento Selvaggio", n# 410 de "I Romanzi di Arnoldo Mondadori", ed ambientato in Normandia (Francia), 1073, leggiamo la descrizione di uno splendido banchetto:

“La quattordicesima portata del banchetto, in onore dei nuovi cavalieri, era la scultura di un gigantesco destriero fatta di  marzapane e zucchero filato, che i servitori trasportarono trionfalmente tra le file dei tavoli, mentre miriadi di giocolieri lanciavano in aria torce accese.” ( pagina 33 dell’edizione americana – mia traduzione).

Sfortunatamente, questo banchetto è “leggermente” in anticipo sui tempi… 200 o 300 anni, più o meno.

Marzapane e zucchero filato, infatti, hanno entrambi lo stesso ingrediente base: lo zucchero. Ma la canna da zucchero nel Medioevo veniva coltivata soltanto dagli Arabi, cosicché lo zucchero venne introdotto nell’Europa Occidentale grazie alle Crociate – e la prima crociata iniziò nel 1096, pertanto dopo gli avvenimenti del libro della Ryan.

Al loro ritorno in patria, i Crociati parlarono di questa “nuova spezia orientale” e di quanto fosse piacevole al gusto. Ma inizialmente, visti i prezzi esorbitanti (arrivava in Europa grazie alle carovane provenienti dall’Oriente, dopo mesi e mesi di viaggio), lo zucchero era un prodotto esotico e di lusso, riservato quasi esclusivamente alla corte dei Re, veniva venduto in farmacia e si riteneva che avesse virtù medicamentose. Molti manuali medici scritti tra il 1200 ed il 1400 raccomandano lo zucchero come ricostituente per gli invalidi e come rimedio per l’impotenza (!). Quando veniva usato in cucina, lo zucchero veniva usato soltanto come una spezia, allo stesso modo dello zafferano, cioè in quantità minime e principalmente per la stagionatura e l’insaporimento delle carni.

La situazione cambiò soltanto 200 anni dopo. Marco Polo racconta che Venezia iniziò nel 1200 a importare zucchero dall’Oriente via nave, nel 1400 cominciò a raffinarlo sul posto, quindi lo zucchero divenne più facile da rintracciare in tutt’Italia. Allo stesso tempo, la canna da zucchero iniziò ad essere coltivata in Sicilia ed in Spagna: questo fece crollare il prezzo dello zucchero, e naturalmente, fece nascere l’arte della pasticceria moderna! ^_^

Be’, mettiamola così: vivere nel Medioevo, senza zucchero e senza dolci, doveva essere davvero una cosa tremenda, ma forse c’era un po’ meno bisogno di cure dentistiche…

Allison Brennan has a distinct voice that lends itself to creating characters that are dedicated people trying to do the best they can. The protagonists look at themselves as ordinary people trying to do a job but they are heroes because they risk their lives to save others. Mentre i due ufficiali di polizia lavorano insieme scoprono di starsi innamorando ma la loro relazione deve essere messa da parte perchè un'altra adolescente universitaria viene uccisa e poco dopo una quarta ragazza viene rapita. Il killer sta calcolando e se non viene catturato molte altre vite andranno perse. Questo romance poliziesco è pieno di azione e da al lettore un interessante prospettiva sullo svolgimento delle indagini. Allison Brennan ha una voce chiara che la porta a creare dei personaggi che sono persone dedicate a cercare di fare il meglio che possono. I protagonisti guardano a se stessi come persone semplici che cercano di fare il loro lavoro ma sono degli eroi perchè rischiano le loro vite per salvare gli altri. Il ritmo veloce della storia tiene i lettori immersi nel racconto fino all'ultima pagina. (Harriet Klausner)

We Need a Hero: A Look at the Eight Hero Archetypes

I have never agreed with the old saw that all romances are alike. However, I do agree there are certain similarities. Besides the happy ending, you can count on a romance having a terrific hero – the kind of guy everyone loves to love.

Non sono mai stata d’accordo con la vecchia diceria che tutti i romance sono uguali. Tuttavia, concordo che ci sono certe somiglianze. A parte il lieto fine, puoi far conto sul fatto che i romance abbiano un bellissimo eroe – il tipo di ragazzo che tutti amano amare.

Or can you? The truth is, just as in real life every woman has her own taste in men, every romance reader has her own taste in heroes. One woman’s dream date is another’s nightmarish evening. The hero I sigh for may make your eyes roll.

O no? La verità è che, come nella vita reale ogni donna ha i propri gusti in fatto di uomini,  ogni lettrice di romance ha i propri gusti in fatto di eroi. L’appuntamento da sogno di una donna può essere l’incubo di un’altra. L’eroe per cui io sospiro potrebbe farti alzare gli occhi al cielo.

We came to this conclusion after a great deal of research, during which, in addition to our usual fiction reading, we reviewed the characters found in movies and plays. In all, we considered about 500 productions, and in the process, wrote a book: Heroes and Heroines: Sixteen Master Archetypes. Sue, Caro and I presented two two programs at the RWA Conference in Chicago on Friday evening – Beyond Alpha and Beyond Cinderella, in which we presented the archetypes we have discovered.

The Chief

This hero is the quintessential alpha hero. He might have been born to lead, or perhaps he conquered his way to the top, but either way, he’s tough, decisive, goal-oriented. That means he is also a bit overbearing and inflexible.

If this man were trapped in a basement with an unconscious heroine and a bomb ticking, his first reaction would be anger, which he would, of course want to take out on someone else. He can never admit he's made a mistake, and since he's been trapped, well...he knows he's made a mistake. So he’s pretty darned mad.

This is the rebel, or the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s bitter and volatile, a crushed idealist, but he's also charismatic and street smart. He hates authority and doesn't buckle under to anyone, which is why he often chooses jobs where he's his own boss. In western historicals, he's the perfect outlaw.

He's going to be resentful and have a bad attitude, but he's used to being in tight spots. He's a Bad Boy, after all. He’ll enjoy beating the stuffing out of those walls. Maybe he’ll just pick the lock, he’s done that sort of thing before! Or does he go way back with one of the villain’s henchmen, who’ll look the other way while he makes his escape?

The Best Friend

This is the beta hero. He's kind, responsible, decent, a regular Mr. Nice Guy.

This man doesn't enjoy confrontation and can sometimes be unassertive because he doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. But he'll always be there.

Quest’uomo non ama la competizione e può certe volte essere poco determinato perché non vuole ferire i sentimenti di nessuno. Ma ci sarà sempre per te.

We all knew this guy in high school and didn’t appreciate him. If we were smart, though, he’s the guy we married. He's a people person and he'll always put the needs of others first.

Who are Best Friends? Well, Tom Hanks almost always plays a Best Friend in his movies. Bill Pullman in While You Were Sleeping is a fine example, and Jimmy Stewart in It's a Wonderful Life pretty much defines the type.

Trapped in the basement, this man would be incredulous. Things like that just don’t happen to him! But his first act would be to care for the heroine. He, alone of all the archetypes, would actually seek her help, because he knows the value of teamwork.

He's practical, down to earth, so he'd assess what could be done and get to work. He'll be very determined because he's responsible for the heroine. Getting his lady and himself out of this situation will be a real confidence booster for him, too.

Rescue is a real possibility, because he’s made friends and done favors for everyone. Everyone likes him. Even the villain thinks it’s a shame to have to get rid of such a nice guy.

The Charmer

We’ve all known these types. Fun, irresistible, a smooth operator, yet not too responsible or dependable. He might be a playboy or a rogue, but he's doesn ’t commit to a woman easily He's not crazy about hard work, and he might be in sales, or a gambler in the wild west.

Tutte abbiamo conosciuto questa tipologia di uomo. Divertente, irresistibile, una persona senza problemi, tuttavia non troppo responsabile o affidabile. Potrebbe essere un playboy o una canaglia, ma non si impegna con una donna facilmente. Of course, he just might be rescued by an old girlfriend who happens along. After all, he's a playboy and knows everyone!

The Lost Soul

Tortured, secretive, brooding, and unforgiving. That’s this man. But he's also vulnerable. He might be a wanderer or an outcast. In work he's creative, but probably also a loner, so he might be an undercover cop, or do something artistic.

Tormentato, taciturno, meditabondo e implacabile. Lui è fatto così. Ma è anche vulnerabile. Potrebbere essere un vagabondo o un emarginato. Nel mondo del lavoro è un creativo, ma probabilmente anche un solitario, così potrebbe essere un poliziotto sotto copertura, o fare qualcosa di artistico.

If a Lost Soul is trapped in the basement, he'll be fatalistic. This is just another example of the series of despairing events that have punctuated his life. It’s a good thing the heroine is there, because otherwise, he might just throw in the towel. But he won’t let the villains kill her, so he will save them both.

The first time you meet him, this logical, introverted, and inflexible guy might not be your idea of a hero, but take another look. He is genuine about his feelings. At work, he likes cold, hard facts, thank you very much, but he's also honest and faithful, and won’t let you down.

This man will analyze all the facts of the situation, make calculations, and see all the small details around him. He'll think his way out. And oh yes, he’ll remember the heroine, too.

Mettere un Professore in una prigione sotterranea con una eroina priva di sensi e il ticchettio di una bomba e lui rimarrà tranquillo, freddo e padrone di sé. Si sistemerà gli occhiali sul naso e si metterà al lavoro per disinnescare la bomba. This guy is action, action, and more action. He's physical and daring. Fearless, he’s a daredevil, or an explorer. He needs thrills and chills to keep him happy.

This man is the reluctant rescuer or the knight in shining armor. He's noble, tenacious, relentless, and he always sticks up for the underdog. If you need a protector, he’s your guy. He doesn’t buckle under to rules, or and he doesn’t go along just to get along.

Questo uomo è un salvatore riluttante o un cavaliere dalla splendente armature. È nobile, tenace, spietato, ed è sempre circondato da perdenti. Se avete bisogno di un protettore, lui è il vostro uomo. Non si piega alle regole di nessuno, e non va da solo soltanto per essere da solo.

Examples of Warriors? Dirty Harry, and most any Steven Seagal character. Check the Die Hard movies too. For a lighter version, try TV’s Hercules. Most superheroes are Warriors .
