Dal questo romanzo è stato tratto un TV movie, NO GREATER LOVE ( 1996, trasmesso in Italia da Canale 5 col titolo:TITANIC, UNA STORIA D’AMORE),con Kelly Rutheford,Chris Sarandon, Gina Philips.
Nel 1912 la giovane americana Edwina si trova sul Titanic con la famiglia e il fidanzato;nella tragedia che tutti conoscono perde i genitori e il fidanzato, trovandosi così, a soli diciotto anni, ad affrontare la responsabilità di crescere i fratelli minori e mandare avanti l’azienda di famiglia.E lo farà in modo egregio, sacrificando però la sua vita privata.
Ma alla fine, dopo dodici anni, anche lei troverà finalmente il meritato amore e la meritata felicità.
E’ il romanzo di Danielle Steel che ancora oggi rileggerei più volentieri, se me ne capitasse l’occasione.Questo perché, pur mantenendo la tipica struttura da romance moderno ( o anche “women’s fiction”,come lo vogliamo chiamare), non narra una storia d’amore così come comunemente la intendiamo, ma un amore più generale:quello per la famiglia e le persone care, soprattutto dopo una tragedia come quella che colpisce la protagonista.
Edwina fino a quella tragica notte del 1912 è una tipica ragazza della buona borghesia americana, cresciuta in una famiglia felice e con un futuro pieno solo di rosee prospettive:il tutto spazzato via in una sola notte dalla stupidità e follia di chi non prese le dovute precauzione ritenendo presuntuosamente il Titanic inaffondabile.La parte della tragedia è narrata in modo molto toccante, soprattutto quando narra del giorno successivo quando Edwina si aggira sulla nave che li ha soccorsi alla ricerca dei sopravvissuti.Come detto, le rimangono solo i fratelli ( tre maschi e due femmine), e il romanzo è quasi completamente incentrato sul modo in cui si occuperà di loro,diventando un vero punto di riferimento in ogni occasione( e va da sé che,essendo un romanzo della Steel,la famigliola sarà colpita ancora da altre disgrazie),aiutandoli a crescere e amandoli e rispettandoli anche quando le loro strade non prenderanno il corso che la giovane si era ripromessa per loro.
Un difetto di questo romanzo è il fatto che non riesce a seguire bene tutti i personaggi ( infatti dei sei fratelli tre rimangono in ombra),un pregio invece è il modo di descrivere ,attraverso le difficoltà che la protagonista si trova ad affrontare improvvisamente anche al di fuori dell’ambito familiare, come era organizzata la società americana dell’epoca e le difficoltà in cui poteva incorrere una donna dell’epoca che decideva di intraprendere una strada lavorativa non prettamente femminile.
Le amanti delle storie d’amore si tranquillizzino, anche qui nonostante tutto ce ne sono due o tre, ma sappiate che sono messe in ombra rispetto a quell’amore più grande cui si riferisce il titolo:quello per la famiglia.

Ha pubblicato 41 romanzi, molti dei quali hanno raggiunto il primo posto nella classifica di vendita del New York Times. Questo è uno dei suoi primi romanzi, uscito nel 1984. Fa parte dei suoi romanzi storici medievali e post medievali (il medioevo di solito si fa durare fino al 1492, anno della scoperta dell'America), ma non rientra in nessuna delle sue serie/saghe. Ma comunque la Lindsey è sempre la stessa: sensuale ed eccitante, con un pizzico di ironia.

British, Canadian, and American romances are read all over the world, with many best-selling authors making most of their money from international sales; meanwhile, distinct national traditions of romance writing have developed, or continue to flourish, in

I romanzi inglesi, canadesi e americani sono letti in tutto il mondo, con molte autrici di successo i cui maggiori introiti arrivano dalle vendite internazionali; nel frattempo, si sono sviluppate particolari tradizioni nazionali sul modo di scrivere romance, o continuano a nascere, in Australia, India, Cina e ovunque. In tutti i mercati, il genere romance è sottoposto ad una sostanziale espansione esterna ed interna: non solo le tradizionali autrici di romance si stanno allargando alla letteratura principale, ma il genere romance sta esso stesso esplodendo in nuovi sottogeneri, ognuno aggiungendo una svolta romantica alle precedenti nicchie di mercato. Sadly, academic criticism and theory of the romance—whether literary criticism, sociological analysis, editorial theory, or feminist scrutiny—has not kept up with the changes in the genre. Janice Radway's sociological evaluation of romance readers and literary analysis of the romance genre is more than twenty years out-of-date, written before any of the changes that define the modern romance had evolved. "Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women," edited by best-selling romance author Jayne Ann Krentz, is an invaluable tool for the romance critic, but is now more than ten years old and never claimed to be academic. It is well past time for a volume of sophisticated, rigorous, and romance-positive academic analyses of romance.

* Sub-genres (history, narrative structure, expectations, formulae, changes): Western, Regency, Medieval, Generic historical, Christian or inspirational, Military, Paranormal (vampire, were, empath, etc.), Futuristic/time travel, Multi-cultural, Erotica, Gay/lesbian, Contemporary, humor, etc.
* Comparison with Chick Lit / Rise of Chick Lit
* A re-evaluation of a canonical text from a romance perspective

* Romance using and/or rewriting literary archetypes, mythology, the Bible, fairy tales
* Encounters between romance fiction and philosophy or literary / cultural theory: i.e., queer, new historical, or cultural-studies readings of romance novels or the romance-novel industry; romance fiction and the philosophical study of eros, marriage, and love
* Psychology and romance fiction: are Freudian and post-Freudian models (Chodorow, Lacan, Kristeva) the best for understanding popular romance fiction? What can more recent research into the psychology of optimism, resilience, and happiness (e.g., the work of Martin Seligman) reveal about the genre? What psychological models and theories are visibly deployed by particular novels or novelists, and what do the works do with them?
Quindi cerchiamo saggi per un libro accademico di critica positiva sul romance e di analisi del genere romance. Accettiamo volentieri saggi su romanzi d’amore, autrici, o sul genere romance da ogni prospettiva disciplinare o teorica, incluso:
