But beware, do not waste your time with trivial mistakes such as misspelling of foreign fords etc. : we are looking for REAL mistakes – the equivalent of a Roman centurion with a Swatch at his wrist, okay ? No kidding with trifles girls, only blunders will do! Attenzione però, lasciate perdere le banalità, ad esempio, parole straniere scritte con errori ortografici etc: cerchiamo i VERI errori, insomma l’equivalente di un centurione romano con lo Swatch al polso, chiaro ? Qui non si scherza, ragazze: si sbaglia sul serio !
In “Wild Wind” by Patricia Ryan, set in the “The banquet’s fourteenth course, in honor of the new knights, was a giant warhorse sculpted of marzipan and spun sugar, which servants paraded between the rows of tables while myriad jugglers tossed lit torches into the air.” ( page 33 of the US edition ). Unfortunately this banquet is just “a little bit” early… 200 or 300 years, more or less. Marzipan and spun sugar are both based upon the same ingredient: sugar. But sugar cane in the Middle Ages was grown only by the Arabs, so that sugar was only discovered by western Europeans as a result of the Crusades -and the first Crusade was started in 1096, therefore after miss Ryan’s book events. Crusaders returning home talked of this "new Oriental spice" and how pleasant it was. But at the beginning, given its expensive nature (it arrived in The situation changed only 200 years later: Marco Polo mentions that Well, let’s put things this way: life in the Middle Ages, with no sugar and no sweets, should have been really awful, but at least perhaps there was less need for dental treatments… ^_^
Fruit shapes molded from marzipan Frutta di marzapane QUANT’ERA DOLCE IL MEDIOEVO… Nel romanzo “Wild Wind” di Patricia Ryan, edito in Italia come "Vento Selvaggio", n# 410 de "I Romanzi di Arnoldo Mondadori", ed ambientato in Normandia (Francia), 1073, leggiamo la descrizione di uno splendido banchetto: “La quattordicesima portata del banchetto, in onore dei nuovi cavalieri, era la scultura di un gigantesco destriero fatta di marzapane e zucchero filato, che i servitori trasportarono trionfalmente tra le file dei tavoli, mentre miriadi di giocolieri lanciavano in aria torce accese.” ( pagina 33 dell’edizione americana – mia traduzione). Sfortunatamente, questo banchetto è “leggermente” in anticipo sui tempi… 200 o 300 anni, più o meno. Marzapane e zucchero filato, infatti, hanno entrambi lo stesso ingrediente base: lo zucchero. Ma la canna da zucchero nel Medioevo veniva coltivata soltanto dagli Arabi, cosicché lo zucchero venne introdotto nell’Europa Occidentale grazie alle Crociate – e la prima crociata iniziò nel 1096, pertanto dopo gli avvenimenti del libro della Ryan. Al loro ritorno in patria, i Crociati parlarono di questa “nuova spezia orientale” e di quanto fosse piacevole al gusto. Ma inizialmente, visti i prezzi esorbitanti (arrivava in Europa grazie alle carovane provenienti dall’Oriente, dopo mesi e mesi di viaggio), lo zucchero era un prodotto esotico e di lusso, riservato quasi esclusivamente alla corte dei Re, veniva venduto in farmacia e si riteneva che avesse virtù medicamentose. Molti manuali medici scritti tra il 1200 ed il 1400 raccomandano lo zucchero come ricostituente per gli invalidi e come rimedio per l’impotenza (!). Quando veniva usato in cucina, lo zucchero veniva usato soltanto come una spezia, allo stesso modo dello zafferano, cioè in quantità minime e principalmente per la stagionatura e l’insaporimento delle carni. La situazione cambiò soltanto 200 anni dopo. Marco Polo racconta che Venezia iniziò nel 1200 a importare zucchero dall’Oriente via nave, nel 1400 cominciò a raffinarlo sul posto, quindi lo zucchero divenne più facile da rintracciare in tutt’Italia. Allo stesso tempo, la canna da zucchero iniziò ad essere coltivata in Sicilia ed in Spagna: questo fece crollare il prezzo dello zucchero, e naturalmente, fece nascere l’arte della pasticceria moderna! ^_^ Be’, mettiamola così: vivere nel Medioevo, senza zucchero e senza dolci, doveva essere davvero una cosa tremenda, ma forse c’era un po’ meno bisogno di cure dentistiche…

MEMORIE DEL PASSATO by Andreina Once upon a time there was a little girl who really loved reading, and now that she is a woman, she reads even more! C’era una volta una ragazzina che leggeva tanto, ma proprio tanto, e , adesso che è una donna legge ancora più di prima! I believe myself to be very versatile in my readings, but, I guess that by now, when talking of historical romance, is well know that my preference goes to Medieval settings.
After 20 years, I’ve reread what I think was my first medieval, a book that I’ve enjoyed very much and is now one of my keepers, to see if my tastes as a girl have changed or if my judgment was due to my age. Not at all! Mi ritengo eclettica con le mie letture, ma credo che anche all’equatore oramai sappiano che il genere che prediligo per quanto riguarda i romance storici è il medievale. Con un distacco di circa 20anni ho riletto un libro, credo il mio primo romance medievale, che avevo amato tanto da tenerlo nei miei preferiti, per verificare se i miei gusti di ragazzina si erano col tempo evoluti o se il mio giudizio fosse dovuto all’età . Niente affatto!

Ho adorato “Il lupo e la colomba” prima e adesso, gli anni passati non hanno intaccato il mio giudizio per questo libro. Il Medioevo è un epoca storica si di gradi conflitti, guerre, faide, lotte per il potere, e la donna a volte ne è lo strumento, ma per me rimane l’epoca in cui la mente a volte contorta dell’uomo ha concepito quelli che ritengo siano i capolavori della storia: i castelli. I castelli con le dame, i cavalieri, i tornei, gli abiti meravigliosi, i broccati, le sete...e quant’altro. Tutti sappiamo cosa sono i castelli e a cosa servivano ma…ho voluto sondare l’argomento e vorrei farvi partecipi della mia passione perché, come avrete capito, io adoro i castelli.
The castle was a massive building that used to be the abode of the liege, its first appearance was around the year one thousand as a defence against the Barbarian invasions; it usually rose up a hill, so that it could tower above the valleys, the woods and villages. Though it wasn’t only the house of the lord, but it sheltered the villagers during enemies raid, that’s why they had hefty walls, and merlons, that provided a better cover for the soldiers during the attacks. The position of the castle was studied so that from there you could have control of a vast territory, and anticipate any attack; the walls were moated, and the access was granted by a drawbridge. Possenti costruzioni, essi erano le dimore dei signori feudali, e furono costruiti intorno all’Anno Mille per proteggere i proprietari terrieri dalle invasioni barbariche; sorgevano in genere su colline e dominavano pianure, boschi e villaggi; non era comunque solo la casa del signore feudale, ma accoglievano, durante gli attacchi dei nemici, tutto il popolo, che trovava rifugio dentro la fortezza; essa era circondata da possenti mura coronate da merli che servivano per difendere i soldati durante un attacco dei nemici. Dalla posizione del castello, infatti, si poteva controllare un vasto territorio e prevenire l’attacco dei nemici; era circondato da un fossato e per entrare e uscire da esso si servivano di un ponte levatoio, che veniva abbassato all’occorrenza. Inside the walls there was the citadel, were the people carried out their duties toward the lord of the manor, there where carpenters, bakers, smiths, servants, cobblers etc, everyone was working and contributing to the welfare of the feud, in return, the liege provided for their protection and well-being. The life in the feud, when it wasn’t under attack, was quiet and peaceful. All’interno delle mura c’era la cittadina con il popolo che serviva il suo signore, falegnami, panettieri, fabbri, servi, calzolai, tutti lavoravano e contribuivano al benessere del feudo; in cambio il loro signore provvedeva alla loro protezione e al loro benessere. La vita nel feudo si svolgeva tranquillamente quando non vi erano attacchi nemici. Dentro il castello vi era la sala grande dove il signore amministrava la giustizia, mitigava dispute, faceva valere la legge, ma era anche il luogo dove esso banchettava, accoglieva ospiti, dove si cantava e danzava.
Someone may consider the Middle Age as the Dark Age, but no one can deny the exceptional value of its legacies: even if it was a period of of great conflicts, it was even a time of great inventions like glasses, forks, cheques, chess, the Christian calendars, the watch etc… Let’s get back to the subject and have a look at these wonderful pictures, account of an era that much left to posterity, I hope they will stir in you the same amazing emotions I feel wherever I look at them. I would have loved to live in that time, to walk in the huge halls of the castles, to dress in one of the beautiful gowns the ladies used to wear, to attend the jousts…but this is quite another story. Insomma un periodo, il Medioevo, chiamato anche “secoli bui”, ma che ci ha lasciato delle bellissime testimonianze; periodo di grandi conflitti, ma di grandi invenzioni, come gli occhiali, la forchetta e gli assegni, gli scacchi, il calendario cristiano, l’orologio, etc. Tornando ai castelli, guardate che spettacolo queste immagini, testimonianze di un’epoca storica che tanto ha dato ai posteri , sperando che susciti in voi la stessa incredibile emozione che provo io in nel guardarli. Epoca in cui mi sarebbe piaciuto vivere, solo per poter passeggiare nelle sue immense sale, per portare i meravigliosi vesti delle dame, per assistere ai tornei…ma, questa è un’altra storia. Glossary:
1) barbican: reinforcing structure for the centre of the castle. Was placed on the front of the castle to protect the door of the fortress.
2) bartizan: a mobile wooden structure, it was fixed to the cranellation of the castle during sieges as a further defence. It’s not very clear from the drawing, but the bartizans were usually placed above the parapet walk, so from there you could throw projectiles.
3) parapet walk: space provided for the patrols along the cranellation of the walls. The sentinels used to stride along it to ensure that the walls were safe.
4) crenel: narrow opening in the walls through which the soldiers could shoot arrows, and still be hidden.
5) moat: a ditch bored around the outer walls of the castle, it was usually filled with water to prevent the assaulters from reaching the fortress.
6) gate: is the entrance to the castle, inside is reinforced by a portcullis.
7) list: space between two baileys
8) keep: a tower surrounded by walls. It was the liege’s headquarters, and it was the ultimate bastion against the enemies.
9) cranellation: set of the merlons that rings the top of the walls of a castle.
10) drawbridge: wooden bridge placed at the main entrance to the castle; it was secured with chains, and through them lifted or lowered over the moat.
11) portcullis: iron gate toughened with studs. It’s placed behind the main door to the castle and supported by ropes and chains, which allowed its vertical slide along provided runners, that are not shown in this drawing.
12) watchtower: a small slender tower placed above the donjon as a watch post.
13) corner towers: placed at the corners of the walls, they were the mark of the lord power.
14) donjon: here are represented by towers placed by the side of the castle.
