But while those images were impressive–Cherif is really something to look at–some understanding of the man behind them are proof positive that he's a modern-day hero–or as near to a knight as you can get at the end of the 20th century!
Born in Quebec and raised in the Midwest, Cherif effectively became the man of the family at the age of five, when his Algerian father left. Toughened by the loss, Cherif grew to be a star athlete and martial arts practitioner, nourishing his romantic side through an obsession with medieval tales of chivalry and valor.
While in college, Cherif noticed an odd building under construction in his Chicago suburb. When he discovered it was a jousting and tournament arena–Medieval Times–it was all of his passions coming together. The owners wanted experienced performers–experts on horseback–and Cherif had never so much as looked a horse in the eye.

Still, he was determined and strong–and soon he was one of a handful of novices to be accepted. Within a year–and for the following six years–he was the star of the show, performing five nights a week. As he charged at opponents on horseback with a 15-foot lance and engaged in hand-to-hand combat with a sword or deadly axe, audiences ate him up.
One night, photographic illustrator Lynn Sanders sat in one of those audiences, she was bowled over by Cherif's athletic grace; when the two met, she was equally taken by his gentleness and intelligence. Soon he began to model for her–and he took her art in a whole new direction.
So began a collaboration that continues to wow the romance world. In February of 1997 their second cover appeared on Virginia Henley's hardcover A YEAR AND A DAY, and more followed. The two also worked together on the yet-to-be-published PASSION'S BLOOD, a romance that's illustrated with 50 hand-painted portraits.

CHERIF REVEALS WHAT LIFE IS REALLY LIKE FOR A ROMANTIC HERO!

When Lynn Sanders asked me to describe what it was like to work for her on her Romantic by Design catalog, I was apprehensive.
I'm not saying that I'm not proud of the beautiful images that she has captured. On the contrary. I've worked in the entertainment and modeling industries for years and rarely have I seen more artful photographs. Working firsthand with the products, I would gladly attest to their quality. But quite frankly, I didn't want to relive some of the memories.

 

Quando Lynn Sanders mi chiese di descrivere cosa significasse lavorare per lei, per il suo catalogo Romantic by Design, mi prese l’ansia.

Non che non sia orgoglioso delle bellissime immagini che ha catturato. Al contrario. Ho lavorato nell’industria dell’intrattenimento e della fotografia  per anni e raramente ho visto fotografie altrettanto artistiche.

Lavorando di prima mano con il prodotto, direi che sono decisamente di qualità. Ma, francamente, non vorrei rivivere alcuni dei miei ricordi.

You see, in the last three years I've been stabbed at, cut at, frozen, at the mercy of wild animals, nearly drowned (more than once), plagued by insects, burned, jeered at and generally pushed to the point of complete exhaustion. I have the scars (and photos) to prove it. I've also developed awe for the men at Isandhlwana, the Charge of the Light Brigade, Custer's Last Stand and any of the other battles that have forced a fighter to overcome the instinct to flee from danger in order to get the job done.
Lynn is the embodiment of friendly, down-home charm, but when a camera enters her hand an unexpected change occurs. Awash with confidence, she's infused with a gung-ho, "charge-up-the-hill" attitude that I imagine David must have had as he approached Goliath. Some would say this change is amusing. That's true–except when it's aimed at you.

 

Vedete, negli ultimi tre anni, sono stato pugnalato, tagliuzzato, congelato, lasciato alla mercé di animali selvatici, quasi annegato (più di una volta), tormentato dagli insetti, bruciato, canzonato e generalmente spinto alla soglia dell’esaurimento completo. Ho cicatrici (e foto) che lo provano. Ho anche sviluppato un’ammirazione per gli uomini della Light Brigade, durante la carica a Isandhlwana, l’ultima azione di Custer, o quelli di altre battaglie che hanno dovuto superare l’istinto di scappare dal pericolo per portare a termine il loro lavoro.

Lynn è la personificazione del fascino amichevole e alla mano, ma quando prende in mano una macchina fotografica, si verifica un cambiamento inaspettato. Inondata di fiducia e di entusiasmo, assume l’atteggiamento da “conquista la collina” che Davide deve aver avuto nell’avvicinarsi a Golia. Qualcuno direbbe che questo cambiamento è divertente. E’ vero, a meno che tu non sia il suo bersaglio.

Ms. Sanders (as I call her when I'm begging for mercy) will stop at nothing to get photographs. That includes dunking me in Illinois' frozen Rock River when I was clad in a suit of full plate armor and chainmail or urging me to stand for hours in the rattlesnake-festooned wilds of central Texas with nothing but a loin cloth between my tender parts and swarms of hungry mosquitoes. I've heard the adage that one should suffer for one's art, but I had assumed that meant losing sleep and skipping meals–not risking life and limb.
I was overjoyed when Lynn gathered the Heroes of the Heart, men from across the country who are featured in the Romantic by Design catalog. I thought this meant a reprieve from the grueling schedule of photo sessions. After all, more models (i.e. targets) would surely keep Lynn busy.

 

Mr. Sanders (come la chiamo quando sto implorando pietà) non si ferma davanti a niente per sccattare una fotografia. E questo include farmi inzuppare nel fiume ghiacciato Rock River dell’Illinois mentre indosso un costume in armatura e di maglia di ferro, o obbligandomi a stare in piedi per ore nel centro selvaggio e infestato di serpenti del Texas con niente addosso tranne un perizoma per mie parti intime e uno sciame di zanzare affamate.  Conoscevo il detto che bisogna soffrire per andare avanti nel mondo dell’arte, ma pensavo significasse dormire poco e saltare i pasti – non rischiare di rimetterci un braccio o una gamba, o addirittura la pelle.

Fui felicissimo quando Lynn iniziò a preparare Heroes of the Heart, uomini di tutto il paese ritratti nel catalogo Romantic by Design. Pensavo che questo significasse una tregua dalla crudele programmazione di sessioni fotografiche. Dopotutto, più modelli (e vittime) avrebbero sicuramente tenuto Lynn impegnata.

 

 

 

Alas, I underestimated her energy. Romantic by Design features, among other things, a gallery section that offers 37 hand-painted photographs of the Heroes. Most of my female friends use words like "hot" or "sexy" when describing the gallery, but all that comes to my mind are phrases like "18-hour days," "red-eye flights" and "never mind the fire ants, stand still while I get this light reading." I take a certain measure of comfort in knowing that my fate is shared by the six other Heroes of the Heart.(excerpt from RT website)
 

Ahimè, avevo sottovalutato la sua energia. Romantic by Design presenta, tra le altre cose, una galleria di 37 fotografie dipinte a mano degli Eroi. Molte delle mie amiche usano le parole “bollente” o “sexy” quando descrivono la galleria, ma tutto quello che mi viene in mente sono frasi del tipo “giorni di 18 ore”, “voli con gli occhi rossi” e “non preoccuparti delle formiche rosse, stai fermo mentre preparo l’illuminazione”. Visto il successo dell’iniziativa di San Valentino,Andreina e io abbiamo deciso di continuare il nostro viaggio nel mondo dei film d’amore tratti da romanzi o racconti, celebri e non..eccovene quindi altri cinque!Buona visione!

 

1 SETTIMO CIELO ( Seventh Heaven,1927)       

 

Regia di Frank Borzage, con Janet Gaynor ( Diane),Charles Farrell ( Chico).

 

 

 

Parigi,1914.Diane è una giovane donna che vive nei bassifondi di Parigi con la crudele sorella che la maltratta e, a un suo tentativo di scappare, cerca di ucciderla.In suo difesa interviene Chico, uno spazzino che mette in fuga la cattiva e cerca di dissuadere la sventurata Diane dall’idea del suicidio.Mosso a compassione dalla sorte cui andrebbe incontro Diane, che è sola al mondo come lui, il giovane decide di ospitarla in casa propria, una soffitta di un palazzo popolare, da cui si vede tutta Parigi.

Vivendo insieme i due s’innamorano e si sposano, ma scoppia la Prima Guerra mondiale e Chico è costretto a partire…

 

Tratto da un racconto dello sconosciuto ( almeno per me, non ho trovato nulla su questo autore nemmeno su Internet) Austin Strong-intitolato anch’esso SETTIMO CIELO,1922-, mi rendo conto che ora quasi nessuno lo conosce:ed è veramente un peccato.Perchè questo è un film talmente bello,talmente ben fatto ( il regista Borzage denota una maestria e una sensibilità rare), talmente…super, che in un breve commento non trovo tutte le parole per descriverlo come merita. Vedere la storia d’amore tra i due giovani poveri che trovano il loro angolo di paradiso in una soffitta è come leggere una poesia, e questo film è una vera poesia d’amore.  E’ un film muto, ma sicuramente molto più espressivo di molti film sonori( soprattutto di oggi), e non solo grazie alla bravura del regista,ma anche grazie all’alchimia tra i due protagonisti Charles Farrell e Janet Gaynor, una delle coppie più belle mai viste al cinema,alla fotografia che ci mostra le fantastiche vedute di Parigi dalla soffitta in un’aura quasi magica e la bellissima colonna sonora ( ovviamente, per la nostra epoca, abbastanza datata, ma a me è piaciuta tantissimo.

 

Per cercare di dare un’ulteriore idea della bellezza e della poesia espresse in questo film cito il parere di Martin Scorsese nel suo documentario VIAGGIO NEL CINEMA AMERICANO:” …Borzage non era una persona colta, il suo stile era istintivo…ciò che lo ispirava era la forza stessa delle emozioni.Era questo il grande mistero che elevava i suoi melodrammi al rango di pure canzoni d’amore”.

Il film fu uno dei grandi protagonisti della prima Notte Degli Oscar nel 1928:vinse tre premi Oscar ( Borzage come miglior regista, Janet Gaynor come miglior attrice e miglior sceneggiatura a Benjamin Blazer),mancando quello come miglior film.

 

2- COLAZIONE DA TIFFANY ( Breakfast at Tiffany’s,1961)

 

Regia di Blake Edwards, con Audrey Hepburn( Holly),George Peppard ( Paul),Mickey Rooney ( Mr.Hiunioshi).

 

 

Holly Golightly è una giovane donna eccentrica e vivacissima che vive a New York e il cui passatempo preferito è recarsi la mattina a fare colazione guardando le vetrine della celebre gioielleria Tiffany.Nel suo palazzo vive anche Paul, un giovane aspirante scrittore mantenuto da una ricca signora matura invaghitasi di lui, un uomo annoiato che non trova nessuna ispirazione per il libro che vuole scrivere.

Inizialmente il loro rapporto è solo di amicizia, ma man mano che Holly coinvolge Paul nel suo mondo apparentemente dorato e nelle sue avventure, il loro rapporto si trasformerà in qualcosa di più profondo.

 

Che dire di uno dei film più famosi e ancora oggi apprezzati della storia del cinema?Tratto da un racconto di Truman Capote ( 1959), la storia  di un personaggio eccentrico ma essenzialmente solo  e disorientato come è Holly nel libro viene trasformata in una commedia dolce , divertente e sofisticata.

Audrey Hepburn offre la sua interpretazione più famosa assieme alla principessa di VACANZE ROMANE, un’icona rimasta nella storia del cinema e anche della moda ( il tubino nero di Givenchy indossato dalla protagonista nella prima scena del film e gli occhiali da sole), per la sua grazie e il suo umorismo, oltre che per la sua bellezza e il suo stile.

 

Ottimo esempio di commedia sofisticata, anche per la presenza di efficaci comprimari ( come Mickey Rooney in un ruolo straordinariamente comico), il film fu sonobbato dagli Oscar ricevendo solo una nomination per Audrey Hepburn come migliore attrice e un Oscar per la colonna sonora di Henry Mancini, con l’indimenticabile MOON RIVER.

 

3-JANE EYRE ( 1996)

 

Regia di Franco Zeffirelli, con Charlotte Gainsbourg ( Jane),William Hurt ( Edward Rochester),Joan Plowrtight ( Mrs.Fairfax),Anna Paquin ( Jane da piccola).

 

La giovane Jane Eyre, orfana, è cresciuta in casa degli ziii.Alla morte dello zio la crudele zia che non l’ha mai sopportata la manda all’orfanotrofio,dove Jane cresce e riceve l’istruzione necessaria per diventare istitutrice.Diventata adulta, viene assunta dal nobile Edward Rochester per occuparsi di Adele, una piccola orfana di cui si è fatto carico.Nonostante il fare misterioso del suo datore di lavoro e altrettanto misteriosi rumori che risuonano ogni tanto nella magione di Tornhfield Hall, Jane si trova benissimo, tanto da conquistarsi prima la stima e poi l’amore ( ricambiato)del duro Rochester.Ma quello che sembrerebbe un lieto fine è solo l’inizio di un periodo durissimo, in cui vengono a galla rivelazioni sul turbinoso passato di Rochester che mettono alla prova l’amore tra di loro.

 

Tratto dal romanzo omonimo di Charlotte Bronte ( 1847),Jane Eyre in realtà non è solo una storia d’amore , ma soprattutto la storia della realizzazione di una giovane donna non bella ma intelligente,  indipendente e di forti sentimenti.Jane è uno dei personaggi più moderni della letteratura di tutti i tempi, e la storia di cui è protagonista mescola elementi gotici tipici della letteratura dell’epoca, una profonda storia d’amore che va al di là del facile romanticismo e la descrizione eccellente di un’epoca storica.Tenendo conto di ciò, posso dire che Zeffirelli ha realizzato un ottimo film, riuscendo a cogliere e rendere visibili alllo spettatore, anche a livello emozionale, tutte queste componenti.

 

Perfetta Charlotte Gainsbourg nel ruolo di Jane, con cui ha affinità sia fisiche( basta con le Jane bellissime di altri film!!Jane non era bella fisicamente, ma interiormente, e solo Zeffirelli l’ha capito!!!) che spirituali, e che riesce a rendere il personaggio così com’è nel libro,bravissimo anche William Hurt nel ruolo del tormentato Rochester ( anche se a tratti l’ho trovato un po’ ingessato), e splendida la fotografia con cui viene ritratto il nebuloso paesaggio inglese, specchio dell’anima e delle vicende dei protagonisti.

 

Dal romanzo furono tratti altri film:LA PORTA PROIBITA ( 1944)di Robert Stevenson, con Orson Welles e Joan Fontane, apprezzabile sopratutto per l’atmosfera gotica, e JANE EYRE, L’ANGELO DELL’AMORE ( 1934) di William Christy Cabanne, con Virginia MAson e Colin Clive.Ricordiamo anche lo sceneggiato RAI del 1957 con Raf Vallone, Ilaria Occhini e Ubaldo Lay.

 

4- RAGIONE E SENTIMENTO ( Sense and sensibility, 1995)

 

Regia di Ang Lee, con Emma Thompson ( Elinor Dashwood),Kate Winslet ( Marianne Dashwood),Hugh Grant ( Edward Ferrars),Alan Rickman ( Colonnello Brandon), Greg Wise ( Willoughby).

 

La vita delle sorelle Elinor e Marianne Dashwood, appartenenti a uan ricca famiglia inglese, cambia drasticamente alla morte del padre:la magione di famiglia viene ereditata dal fratello maggiore( figlio del primo matrimonio del padre)e a causa dell’insopportabile cognata sono costrette , insieme con la madre e un’altra sorella, a trasferirsi in un cottage offerto loro generosamente da Sir John, cugino di Mrs Dashwood, che cerca di alleviare come può la situazione di povertà delle parenti.Ma i problemi economici passano in secondo piano quando le due sorelle, unite ma diversissime di carattere ( la prima ragionevole e controllata, la seconda impulsiva e romantica) vengono a contatto con questioni di cuore:Elinor soffre per l’amore corrisposto ma da nascondere con Edward Ferrars, il gentile fratello della cognata, gravato dalle aspettative materne che gli impediscono di costruirsi il proprio avvenire; Marianne viene corteggiata con successo dal bellissimo e giovane Willoughby, a scapito dell’altro corteggiatore , il maturo  e silenzioso Colonnello Brandon.Ma il loro cammino e la loro educazione sentimentali sono appena inziati…

    

Tratto dal romanzo ( 1811) di Jane Austen, il taiwanese Ang Lee ottenne meritatamente la sua consacrazione a Hollywood con questo film accurato ed elegante, che ritrae alla perfezione l’atmosfera inglese dei romanzi della Austen.La sceneggiatura è curata dalla protagonista Emma Thompson, perfetta nella parte della diciannovenne Elinor nonostante avesse all’epoca il doppio dell’età del personaggio;altrettanto non si può dire del cinquantenne ( più o meno)Alan Rickman nei panni del 36enne colonnello Brandon,che ho trovato deprimente più che malinconico, e del quarantenne Hugh Grant nei panni del venticinquenne Edward Ferrars, un poco ingessato anche se simpatico.In realtà il film è sostenuto, oltre che da alcuni ottimi comprimari( gli attori che interpretano Sir John,  sua suocera Lady Middleton, praticamente indentici al libro)dalle due interpretazione della Thompson e di Kate Winslet che a soli 20 anni conquistò la rpiam nomination all’Oscar per questo film nei panni della romantica Marianne, interpretata in maniera intensa e sentita.

Il film ricevette sette nomination all’Oscar:miglior film, regista attrice protagonista e non protagonista ( Emma Thompson e Kate Winslet),fotografia, colonna sonora,costumi e sceneggiatura ( quest’ultimo vinto dalla protagonista Emma Thompson, anche sceneggiatrice, l’unico Oscar vinto dal film).Vinse l’Orso d’oro al Festival di Berlino di quell’anno e il premio come miglior film al Golden Globe( altro Golden Globe a Emma Thompson come sceneggiatrice).

 

5- RITORNO A COULD MOUNTAIN ( Cold Mountain,2003)

 

Regia di Anthony Minghella, con Nicole Kidman (Ada),Jude Law (Inman).Renee Zellwegger(Ruby),Natalie Portman (Sarah),Donald Sutherland ( Reverendo Monroe).

 

Nel 1865 Ada Monroe si trasferisce da Charleston con l’anziano padre, un reverendo, nel paesino di Cold Mountain.Ada è una giovane donna colta e raffinata,educata come le giovani della migliore società dell’epoca per essere perfette padrone di casa;s’innamora di Inman, un giovane silenzioso contadino che la ricambia, ma il loro amore è fatto più che altro di sguardi e sorrisi fino al giorno in cui scoppia la guerra e Inman parte con gli altri uomini del paese.Dopo qualche tempo, distrutto dagli orrori visti e patiti, decide di disertare e  intraprende un lungo e tormentoso viaggio per tornare a casa, sempre col pensiero rivolto all’amata.

 

La quale, dopo la morte del padre e la carestia portata dalla guerra, ha dovuto intraprendere a sua volta una durissima lotta per sopravvivere, aiutata da Ruby una stravagante e generosa montanara, che diventa la sua migliore amica.

 

Tratto dal romanzo ( 1997) di Charles Frazier, il film all’uscita venne definito impropriamente “il nuovo VIA COL VENTO”;in realtà col capolavoro di Victor Fleming ha in comune solo di essere una storia d’amore ambientata durante la Guerra di Secessione, per il resto è tutto differente.

 

E’ la storia di un grande amore alimentato dalla speranza e, parallelamente, di una grande amicizia tra due donne diversissime che imparano qualcosa l’una dall’altra.Abbiamo tre personaggi molto forti :la fragile ed elegante Ada interpretata in maniera impeccabile da Nicole Kidman, che impara a sopravvivere in un mondo ostile;Inman, uomo silenzioso ma dalla volontà di ferro, e Ruby, giovane donna “ maschiaccio”che, abbandonata dal padre da bambina ha dovuto lottare come un uomo per sopravvivere ( per questo ruolo Renee Zellwegger vinse meritatamente il premio Oscar come miglior attrice non protagonista.).

 

Il viaggio di Inman per tornare dall’amata Ada è raccontato come una moderna Odissea, con episodi  e personaggi ora comici, ora toccanti,mentre l’Odissea personale di Ada e Ruby riguarda le difficoltà di chi è rimasto a casa a combattere una guerra per la sopravvivenza.Nel 2003 il film ricevette sei nomination agli Oscar, ma la statuetta come detto andò solo a Renee Zellwegger.
