I've been hearing rumors of the demise of the historicals--Regencies in particular--long before I was ever published. I sold my first book in 1999, and eight Regency historicals have followed.

The historical market has certainly changed. Many of my favorite writers have moved away from historicals. The two mainstream publishers who published traditional Regencies dropped their lines. The market for medievals and westerns has waned, too.

Despite this, I cannot believe this is the end for Regencies or historical romance. Readers still want to read historicals. I've also noticed many traditional Regencies are finding new life with e-publishers, which is wonderful!

The publishing industry seems to run in cycles. Right now, paranormals are popular. The market will eventually become glutted (if it hasn't already) and something else will become the new favorite. Hopefully, historicals will reemerge stronger than ever:)
