H. ROSE MELOCHE: WHEN DIGITAL TRESPASSES ON PAINTING

1) Your covers are painted covers, and today the trend market are for digital covers. Do you have problem to obtain commissions? Have you ever the temptation to switch on digital art?

Thank you so much - that's unintentionally a huge compliment to start off with. My work is actually entirely digital, I gave up working with traditional media (formerly airbrush and oil paints) years ago in favor of Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter. I don't like work that's recognizeably done in photoshop, however, and try very hard to make everything look hand painted. I'll frequently start with a pencil sketch of an idea, then do the majority of the work in Painter and take it into Photoshop for the final editing and cleanup.

Grazie mille – questo è involontariamente un grande complimento per cominciare. Il mio lavoro in realtà è interamente digitale, ho smesso di lavorare con gli strumenti tradizionali (prima usavo pennelli e pittura ad olio) anni fa in favore di Adobe Photoshop e Corel Painter. Tuttavia non mi piacciono i lavori che sono chiaramente riconoscibili come fatti con Photoshop e cerco con tutta me stessa di fare in modo che ogni cosa appaia come dipinta. Spesso incomincio con uno schizzo a matita per un’idea, poi la maggior parte delle volte lavoro in Painter e porto il tutto in Photoshop per il lavoro finale e la definizione.

2) How do you work, how you mix digital cover and painted cover to obtain your style, that is very particular?

My technique is based in traditional media - I learned on pencil, pastel, airbrush and oil paints. I honestly use the same style in my digital work, just with less mess and waiting for pieces to dry! Digital offers more freedom to correct mistakes and overlay different types of brush stroke on top of each other, which I like, and there are tricks and filters that can mimic the texture of papers. If I start with a drawing, scanned in, I'll lay in basic colors in Photoshop using a large flat brush and then take it into Painter to do all of the shading, texture and detail work. At the end I'll take it back into Photoshop to do some special effects - more textures, color balancing, overall color adjustment. I usually don't do the text on my covers unless it's incorporated into the image itself (like "Name of the Game" where it's written in the sand).

Come lavori, come abbini le copertine digitali con le copertine dipinte per ottenere il tuo stile, che è molto particolare?

La mia tecnica è basata sugli strumenti tradizionali – ho imparato usando matite, pastelli, pennelli e pittura ad olio. Sinceramente uso lo stesso stile con il mio lavoro digitale, solo con meno sporco e attesa perché un pezzo si asciughi! Il digitale offre più libertà per correggere gli errori e sovrapporre differenti tipi di pennellate una sopra l’altra, cosa che mi piace, e ci sono dei trucchetti e dei filtri che possono replicare la trama del foglio. Se incomincio con un disegno, lo scannerizzo, e lo riempio con i colori base in Photoshop usando molte pennellare piatte e poi lo trasporto in Painter per fare l’ombreggiatura, la tramatura e il lavoro di dettaglio. Alla fine lo riporto in Photoshop per aggiungere alcuni effetti speciali – più tramatura, bilanciamento dei colori, un generale aggiustamento del colore. Di solito non aggiungo il testo nelle mie copertine a meno che non sia incorporato nell’immagine stessa (come “Name of the Game” dove era scritto nella sabbia).

3) Do you use some software for your work? If yes, what SW do you use and is it more easy for you doing so?

I use Photoshop 5.5 and have resisted switching to any newer version of the program because 5.5 does everything I need it to without a lot of clutter. My copy of Painter is version 7 and I'm still learning how to use it. I work on a Macintosh widescreen iMac, with a small Wacom tablet.

Usi dei programmi per il tuo lavoro? Se si, quali software usi ed è più facile per te farlo?

Uso Photoshop 5.5 e ho resistito ad ogni nuova versione del programma perché 5.5 fa tutto quello di cui ho bisogno senza troppo disordine. La mia copia di Painter è una versione 7 e sto ancora imparando ad usarla. Lavoro con uno schermo piatto Macintosh iMac, con una piccola tavolozza Wacom.

4) Do you use also the photography for your work? Do you start drawing a cover by a picture or is all in your mind?

Both - sometimes I'll start with just an image in my mind and sketch it out. If I run into trouble with it or can't think of anything then I'll go looking for a photo to inspire me. If I'm very rushed for time I'll paint directly over the top of a photograph (or, more usually, a photograph collage of anywhere between three to seven photo elements - pieces of background and figure pasted together in photoshop), blocking in shape and basic color without doing a sketch first.

Usi anche la fotografia per il tuo lavoro? Incomincia disegnano una copertina da una fotografia o è tutto nella tua mente?

Entrambi – qualche volta incomincio con solo una immagine nella mia mente e ne faccio uno schizzo. Se incontro problemi nel farlo o non riesco a pensare a niente cerco una foto che mi ispiri. Se ho molto fretta dipingo direttamente in cima alla fotografia (o, più spesso, un collage da tre a sette foto – pezzi di sfondo e figure mescolate insieme in photoshop), aggiungendo ombre e colori base senza aver fatto lo schizzo prima.

5) Which art tecnique do you prefer?

I'd always prefer to take my time if I can - I like to make very tight, clean pencil drawings first and then have several days to work on the colors. I've only recently started dabbling with the oil painting technique in Painter - before that it was colored pencils, and before that was watercolor. I do a lot of experimenting, especially when given free rein with a book cover; I'm never quite satisfied with what I did last time and always want to try something new.

Ho sempre preferito prendermi il mio tempo se posso – mi piace fare disegni a matita molto netti e puliti e poi avere diversi giorni per lavorare sui colori. Ho solo di recente incominciato a fare schizzi con la tecnica di pittura ad olio in Painter – prima erano matite colorate, e prima erano colori ad acqua. Faccio molte prove, specialmente quando mi viene data mano libera con una copertina di un libro, non sono mai realmente soddisfatta con quello che ho fatto la volta precedente e voglio sempre provare qualcosa di nuovo.

6) What inspires you?

Art! I love looking at other people's art, photography, paintings, drawings, on or off the internet. I'm lucky enough to live just an hour away from Washington DC, the capital city of the United States, which has fabulous art museums and galleries. I also spend a lot of time browsing through places like Deviantart and Conceptart online. I'll often see some treatment - a use of color or framing, some stylistic choice - that inspires me to try something related to it in my own style.

L’Arte! Mi piace guardare il lavoro artistico delle altre persone, fotografia, pittura, disegno, su e fuori da internet. Sono abbastanza fortunata da vivere a solo un ora di strada da Washington DC, la capitale degli Stati Uniti, che ha favolosi musei d’arte e gallerie. Passo anche molto tempo navigando online in siti come Deviantart e Conceptart. Vedo spesso alcune tecniche – un uso dei colori o dell’inquadratura, alcune scelte stilistiche – che mi ispirano a cercare qualcosa di simile nel mio stile.

7) Do you use real models? If yes, who are your models? (In this moment I'm thinking to Secret, Skin and Leather... beautiful!)

Unfortunately I don't have access to anyone willing to pose! I'll use my own photography for backgrounds, sometimes, but figure reference mostly comes from stock photography, most companies for which offer online catalogs. (Sometimes, like in the case of "Secrets", reference from erotic or pornographic photo sites online can be very useful for figures, musculature and props.)

Sfortunatamente non ho accesso a nessuno che sia disposto a posare! Uso le mie stesse fotografie per lo sfondo, qualche volta, ma le figure spesso arrivano da fotografie comprate, molte compagnie offrono cataloghi online. (Qualche volta, come nel caso di “Secrets”, il riferimento a siti online di fotografia erotica o pornografica può essere molto utile per le figure, per la muscolatura e le proporzioni).

8) Which are the romance market and publishers preferences?

I really only work with Torquere Press on bookcovers so I'm afraid as an artist I don't have much of an opinion, not having worked with a wide range.

Qual’è sono le preferenze del mercato del romance e degli editori?

In realtà io lavoro solo con Torquere Press per le copertine di libri così mi spiace, ma come artista non ho una vera e propria opinione, non avendo lavorato con un’ampia gamma di editori.

9) Do you think a cover can contribute to the selling of a book or to its failure?

Absolutely. I do a lot of reading in my spare time and often the image on a book's cover can decide me when I'm browsing through a book store. If the image and the blurb or excerpt don't capture my immediate attention it's easy to overlook a book, even if it's wonderful. Working with Torquere I try very hard to make my covers interesting to the eye but easy to look at.

Pensi che la copertina possa contribuire alla vendita di un libro o al suo fallimento?

Assolutamente. Leggo molto nel mio tempo libero e spesso l’immagine sulla copertina del libro può farmi decidere quando sto gironzolando in una libreria. Se l’immagine e la trama sul retro o l’estratto non catturano immediatamente la mia attenzione è facile trascurare il libro, anche se fosse meraviglioso. Lavorando con Torquere cerco con molto impegno di creare delle copertine interessanti per l’occhio ma facili da guardare.

10) Which covers do you prefer (among yours or not)? Are there some cover artists who inspires you, or did it in the past?

Of my own covers, my favorites are "The Name of the Game" and "Redemption's Ride" - in both cases not for the figure work but for the backgrounds! Prior to doing bookcovers I mostly did pinups and portraiture work, so figures come very naturally to me but working in backgrounds has been a learning experience and I'm finally starting to be proud of them. Of my personal favorites in cover artists, it's actually usually been fantasy novel artists - people like Michael Whelan, Thomas Canty and Christopher Vacher.

Quali copertine preferisci (tra le tue o no)? Ci sono alcuni cover artist che ti ispirano, o lo hanno fatto in passato?

Delle mie copertine, le preferite sono “The Name of the Game” e “Redemption’s Ride” – in entrambi i casi non per il soggetto principale, ma per lo sfondo! Prima di fare copertine per i romanzi facevo principalmente lavori per poster e ritratti, così le figure mi vengono facilmente ma lavorare sugli sfondi è stata un’esperienza nuova e alla fine ho incominciato ad essere fiera di me stessa. Tra i miei preferiti, come cover artist, ci sono in realtà degli artisti per le copertine di romanzi fantasy – persone come Michael Whelan, Thomas Canty e Christopher Vacher.

11) What do you think of the classical clinch cover of the romance?

It's been done *so* much that it has to be really well executed or some new take on it to get my attention as a reader - because I do feel that way I dislike doing them as an artist. I tend to think of that cliche mostly for regency, fantasy or historicals, the classical "bodice rippers" - which I *do* read, but for light entertainment and usually only from the library. The few times I've tried to portray something like that I don't think it's come out very well at all - it's harder to draw than you'd think! I respect that, but it is very overdone in the genre.

Cosa pensi della classiche copertine petto-coscia dei romance?

Sono state fatte “così” tanto che devono essere davvero ben fatte o devono avere qualcosa di nuovo per attirare la mia attenzione come lettore – e dato che provo questa sensazione non mi piace farle come artista. Tendo a pensare a quel cliche per i regency, i fantasy o gli storici, i classici “bodice rippers” – che io “leggo”, ma per l’intrattenimento leggero e di solito solo dalla biblioteca. Le poche volte che ho cercato di dipingere qualcosa di simile non penso che ne sia risultato qualcosa di buono – disegnare è più difficile di quanto penseresti! Li rispetto, ma è un genere veramente sfruttato.

12) You are also a writer? Would tell something about your writings? What genre do you prefer? And you next project (also as an artist and as a writer)?

My prefered genre for writing is fantasy and science fiction; often with a romance included, but set in a fantasy world. I mostly write short pieces - scenes and short stories - but if I write enough of them in the same setting, with the same characters, it turns into a longer work. My next project for Torquere will be the cover to a book called "Bear Country". For myself, my major project is a graphic novel that I'm writing and drawing, called "Ghosts" and set in a fantasy alternate history WWI Europe.

Sei anche una scrittrice? Ci dici qualcosa del tuo lavoro? Quale genere preferisci? E il prossimo progetto (sia come scrittrice che come autrice)?

Il mio genere preferito da scrivere è il fantasy e la science fiction; spesso con una storia d’amore inclusa, ma ambientato un mondo di fantasia. Scrivo principalmente pezzi brevi – scene o storie brevi – ma se ne scrivo abbastanza con la stessa ambientazione, con gli stessi personaggi, diventa un lavoro oiù lungo. Il mio prossimo progetto con Torquere sarà la copertina di un libro intitolato “Bear Country”. Per me stessa, il mio progetto più grande è un romanzo grafico che sto scrivendo e illustrando intitolato “Ghosts” e ambientato in una storia alternativa di fantasia della Seconda Guerra Mondiale in Europa.

13) Tell us something about you? How you have started as a cover artist and as a writer? How is your day to day life? You are a full time artist and/or writer, or do you have another day-time job?

Well, I'll be 34 this year and I've always been an artist - I have an Associates degree in graphic design and I've worked as an animator, illustrator, graphic and web designer, and currently I'm employed in my day-time job on the other end of the industry, as a printer. I've done illustrations for collectible card games and magazines before, and a lot of private portrait commissions. I have yet to sell a piece of writing, everything I do there is just for me, but I've usually had some form of art as my primary employment. I actually find it's less stressful to me to do something else (like printshop work) during the day and keep my art as freelance work in my spare time!

Ci dici qualcosa di te? Come hai cominciato come cover artist e come scrittrice? Com’è la tua vita quotidiana? Sei un’artista o/e una scrittrice a tempo pieno, o hai un altro lavoro durante il giorno?

Beh, ho 34 anni e sono sempre stata un’artista – ho una laurea in disegno grafico e lavoro come animatore, illustratore, grafico e web designer, e attualmente sono impiegata durante il giorno in un altro ramo dell’industria grafica come tipografo. Ho fatto illustrazioni per carte da gioco da collezione e per riviste, e molti lavori commissionati da privati per ritratti. Devo ancora vendere qualcosa scritto da me, ogni cosa che ho fatto è stato solo per me, ma di solito ho sempre avuto un qualche lavoro artistico come primo impiego. In realtà trovo meno stressante fare qualcos’altro (come lavorare in una tipografia) durante il giorno e tenere la mia arte come lavoro da freelance nel mio tempo libero.
