1) Very simple and obvious, but: what are your favourite authors and are you inspired by them?
Christine Feehan: She will ever remain at the top of my list for many reasons, some of which are private and personal to me, but most of all because to me she was the real icebreaker in the genre. She forged the path we now follow.
Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kresley Cole, and VERY VERY MUCH Angela Knight. She hits me on all my bumpers. Amazing writer.
Molto semplice e ovvio, ma: quali sono le tue autrici preferite e ti ispiri a loro per i tuoi libri?
Christine Feehan: lei rimarrà sempre in cima alla mia lista per molti ragioni, alcune delle quali sono private e personali, ma soprattutto perchè per me lei è stata la vera rompighiaccio nel genere. Ha aperto il cammino per noi che seguiamo.
Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kresley Cole, e DAVVERO MOLTO Angela Knight. Lei colpisce tutti i miei punti deboli. Scrittrice straordinaria.
2) Did you plan all the Nightwalkers series or you procede step by step?
Both. I have plans one minute, and the next minute my plans are telling me to 'dream on' and then they change without my permission and...well..it all goes to hell from there, but someohow always seems to work out nicely in the end, so I go with the flow!

3) Are you a romance reader? How do you think the typical romance reader is?
I am a huge romance reader...or I was before I got too busy to read. I love my Happy Ever After. I don;t like couples who hiss and spit the whole way through though. It annoys me. I like Edwardian historicals, paranormals, fantasy, sci-fi. But I don't care for First Person narratives and on-going main characters.
Sei una lettrice di romance? Come pensi che sia la tipica lettrice di romance?
Sono una vorace lettrice di romance... o lo ero prima che diventassi troppo impegnata per leggere. Amo il mio E Vissero Felici e Contenti. Non mi piacciono le coppie che litigano per tutta la storia. Mi annoiano. Mi piacciono gli storici edoardiani, i paranormali, i fantasy, la fantascienza. Ma non mi piace la narrazione in prima persona e i libri seriali con gli stessi protagonisti.
4) How much time did you wait to get publish your work? Have you ever thought to give up?
Actually, I never submitted. The first time I did, I got accepted. So I didn;t go through the pain of rejections like most do. I was very lucky.
Quanto tempo ti ci è voluto per veder pubblicato un tuo libri? Hai mai pensato di mollare?
In realtà, non avevo mai mandato una storia all'attenzione di un editore. La prima volta che l'ho fatto, è stata accettata. Così non sono dovuta passare per il processo doloroso del rifiuto come succede a molti. Sono stata davvero fortunata.
5) Why paranormal? And why according to you, this genre is so popular?
People read to escape. Women also love powerful men with sensitive sides. Strong and decisive men. I don't find many of those in my daily American life.
Perchè il paranormale? E perchè, secondo te, questo genere è così popolare?
Le persone leggono per sfuggire la realtà. Le donne amano gli uomini potenti con un lato sensibile. Uomini forti e decisi. Non ne trovo molti così nella mia quotidiana vita americana.
6) I have noticed you have many links with epublisher's authors and erotica authors: do you think that ebooks are a good think for authors?
It all depends on the publishers and the authors. A lot of my eBook friends tell me that New York published types look down on them. But more and more NY pubs are snapping up eBook authors and there are some real talented ones out there. I don't treat an E-author any different than I would a NY author. We're all in the same boat...trying to be the best we can. I seek loyalty and friendship and people I can trust. That's all that matters to me.

Dipende tutto dagli editori e dagli autori. Molti dei miei amici che pubblicano in ebook mi dicono che gli autori pubblicati a New York (n.d.r. dove risiedono le maggiori case editrici americane) li guardano dall'alto al basso. Ma sempre più le case editrici di New York stanno prendendo al volo gli autori di ebook e ce ne sono di davvero bravi la fuori. Io non tratto un autore di ebook in modo diverso da come tratterei un autore di New York. Siamo tutti sulla stessa barca... stiamo cercando di dare il massimo. Io cerco lealtà e amicizia e persone di cui mi posso fidare. Questo è tutto quello che mi importa.
7) You won a lot of important awards with your first book: how did this change your life?
Really there's no change...unless you count my friends looking at me in awe and the respect of my parents. The latter is the most important thing to me. I like knowing my dad is proud of me.
Hai vinto molti premi importanti con il tuo primo libro: come questo ti ha cambiato la vita (se l'ha fatto)?
Davvero non c'è stato nessun cambiamento... a meno che non tieni in conto che i miei amici mi guardano con stupore e il rispetto dei miei genitori. L'ultima è la cosa più importante per me. Mi piace sapere che il mio papà è orgoglioso di me.
8) Are you a full time writer?
Yes.

9) You said you have italian relatives. Want to tell us some more?
LOL. Italian American. Hungarian too. Frank is a pen name, my dad's first name, but if you knew my real last name you'd know my roots in a heartbeat. But I remember growing up with Sunday pasta and family and cuss words only Italians could understand. hehehe.

(Risata). Italo americani. Anche ungheresi. Frank è il mio pseudonimo, il nome di mio padre, ma se tu sapessi il mio vero nome riconosceresti le mie radici in un attimo. 10) Silly question: I have noticed that many authors who write romance and/or paranormal romance love cats: do you think that there is a link?
I think we just love, period. Perhaps it is because cats love you in sensual ways. Tactile, purring, nudging and constant. Loyal to you and screw everyone else, for the most part. But mostly I feel romance writers are powerful empaths. They feel for themselves yes, but they feel for others even more. The more of them I meet, the more I believe this.
Domanda stupida: Ho notato che molti autori che scrivono romance e/o paranormali amano i gatti: pensi che ci sia un collegamento?
Io penso che amiamo, basta. Forse è perchè i gatti ti amano in modo sensuale. Tattile, facendo le fusa, cercando coccole e in modo costante. Sono fedeli a te imbrogliano tutti gli altri, per la maggior parte. Ma principalmente credo che le scrittrici di romance siano molto brave ad identificarsi con gli altri. Si preoccupano per se stesse sì, ma ancora di più per gli altri. Più ne incontro, più credo in questa cosa.

The Nightwalkers Series:
1) Jacob: Jacob the Enforcer belongs to one of the many Nightwalker races that thrive on the dark of night. He has a job to do for his species and it's rather straightforward. He polices his people. During the full moon their animal urge to mate overcomes them, and if they stay within their race they never need to encounter the Enforcer. But if they cross the line and turn their lust to another species...say humans...it's Jacob's duty to prevent them and then to punish them severely for it. As this 'madness' grows worse and worse for his people, there is hardly a family who hasn't felt the brutal sting of Jacob's justice. Punishment is so dire and so feared, Jacob can call very few others his friend and the life the Enforcer leads is a very solitary one.
Then one night during a hunt for one of his own, he encounters the first human woman who will tempt him in all of his 622 years of life. Isabella is a simple Bronx gal who works at her local library, lives with her sister and owns a cat.
She hardly expects a night of moongazing to change her life forever and send her falling for a man like Jacob in all kinds of outrageous ways. Heck, she certainly doesn't expect that he isn't exactly a 'man'... although he sure looks like one, smells like one and boy-oh-boy does he feel like one!
As for the Enforcer, Jacob finds himself tempted beyond reason, needing Isabella to the point that he begins to strain against every law he has always upheld.
But before long the couple finds themselves fighting for their lives against evil, Jacob's bretheren, and even their own desires for each other. How can they find the way to resist one another before Jacob faces his own punishments...or before Bella ends up dead, torn up from the animal passion inside of him that she, as a human, is too frail to ever endure?

Actually I have a lot of problems with sleep. An ongoing struggle in my life, you could say. But I have hopes of rectifying it.
Now, as to music I go in many different directions depending on character or scene. Techno and trance tracks rule when I have fight scenes or action scenes. Balligomingo and Christoph Beck (themes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) are cued up when I have deeply emotional stuff going on. Then I like B-Tribe, Enigma and other breathy chants for highly sexual scenes. IT works real good :D

In realtà ho molti problemi per dormire. Una continua battaglia della mia vita, si potrebbe dire. Ma ho speranze di risolvere questa cosa.
Ora, per quanto riguarda la mia musica vado in molte direzioni diverse a seconda del personaggio o della scena. Pezzi Techno e Trance mi guidano quando ho una scena di lotta o di azione. Balligomingo e Christoph Beck (colonne sonore da Buffy the Vampire Slayer) quando ho in piedi della roba molto coinvolgente a livello emotivo. Poi mi piace B-Tribe, Enigma e altri canti ad ampio respiro per le scene altamente sensuali. Funziona davvero bene :D

Well there is that, yes, but I find the romance genre to be becoming spicier over time in kind of a natural evolution...keeping up with more liberated views and the demand and desires of the readers. The saying is "Sex sells" But for myself, as a writer, its all going back to those childhood fairytale. We all want a little beast in our men whose good qualities shine through and make us love them anyway. I also sometimes think, as a woman, it's going to take an alien species of men before I find one who gets turned on by fat girls who love cats ;).

Beh in parte anche questo, si, ma io trovo che il genere romance stia diventando più piccante col passare del tempo a causa di una evoluzione naturale... per tenere il passo con delle idee più aperte e con la domanda e i desideri delle lettrici. Dicono che il "sesso vende", ma per me, come scrittrice, è tutta una questione di andare indietro con la mente alle favole dell'infanzia. Noi tutte vogliamo la piccola bestia nei nostri uomini le cui buone qualità risplendono nonostante questo e ce li fanno amare nostante tutto. Anch'io penso qualche volta, come donna, che forse dovrei prendere un uomo alieno visto che non ne trovo uno che si innamori di una ragazza grassa che ama i gatti ;).

vorrei chiederti, a tuo parere perchè così tanti romance paranormali sono davvero "bollenti" ?
cos'è che spinge le autrici ad associare lupi mannari, alieni, vampiri, mutaforma etc. a scene di sesso al calor bianco?
vuol forse dire che sentirsi attratte da un uomo in realtà significa iniziare a cercare l'animale che c'è dentro di lui ? ;-)

Hi Susi,
I was a voracious reader at a very young age. I outstripped the books in my age group in intellect so I craved something more. I felt I could do a better job. I complained about it all the time. One day my stepmother dropped a typewriter into my lap and told my to put my money where my mouth is. I was 13 and I never stopped writing since. I taught myself by trying out every genre you can possibly think of, trying to find my niche. When I hit paranormal it was like an amazing and powerful injection of creativity and energy. The only thing I feel I do just as well is fantasy and science fiction romance.
Also, I was just saying to some friends that I believe there is plenty of room for all of us writers. Thinking that there isn't room in the readers' hearts for new and old is an insult to the readers. And winning prizes is fun, I am very proud of Jacob for that...but it was nothing compared to Gideon hitting the New York Times Bestseller list and the USA Today. Those are great achievements in this country.

Sono una lettrice vorace da quando ero molto giovane. Avevo divorato i libri adatti ai miei coetanei così desideravo qualcosa di più. Sentivo che potevo fare qualcosa di meglio. Mi lamentavo di questo tutto il tempo. Un giorno la mia matrigna ha fatto cadere una macchina da scrivere sul mio grembo e mi ha detto di mettere i miei soldi dove stava la mia bocca. Avevo 13 anni e non ho mai smesso di scrivere da allora. Ho imparato da sola provando tutti i generi che puoi immaginare, cercando di trovare la mia nicchia. Quando ho toccato il paranormale è stato come una iniezione sorprendente e potente di creatività e energia. L'unica cosa che credo di fare altrettanto bene è il romance fantasy e il romance fantascientifico.
E poi, stavo proprio dicendo ad alcuni amici che credo che ci molto spazio per tutti noi scrittori. Pensare che non ci sia spazio nei cuori dei lettori per i nuovi e per i vecchi è un insulto ai lettori. E vincere premi è divertente, sono molto orgogliosa di Jacob per questo... ma non è niente in confronto a Gideon che ha raggiunto la cima della classifica di vendite del New York Times e di USA Today. Questi sono grandi traguardi nel mio paese.

How funny you ask that! I write by myself. I write to soundtracks I make up on my Itunes. I write very fast...it often takes me two weeks to create the initial novel....then a few months later I do a thorough edit. Most of my day is spent entertaining my foster daughter and my fans online. I have a strong presence on my website and in my forums. I believe I owe everything to those who buy me and read me so I try to return that to them in many many ways.
BTW, I tend to write best from midnight to 6am when I have no distractions...much to the displeasure of my doctor.

Quanto è divertente che tu mi chieda questo! Io scrivo da sola. Scrivo con un sottofondo musicale che mi faccio da sola con Itunes. Scrivo veramente in fretta... di solito mi ci vogliono due settimane per creare il romanzo iniziale.... poi alcuni mesi dopo faccio una rivisitazione totale. I'm very curious about it, I've heard of writers who just talk into a recorder and then type or have it typed down and edited, and some on the contrary who likes to write all by themselves, some are very fast, some very slow...

Dici di essere una scrittrice a tempo pieno, penso che questa sia una grande fortuna, poichè molte scrittrici devono invece combinare il lavoro con la scrittura e la famiglia.
Vorresti raccontarci una giornata tipica di una scrittrice?
Sono molto curiosa al riguardo, ho sentito di scrittori che parlano semplicemente in un registratore e poi battono o fanno battere a macchina ed editare la stesura, altri al contrario cui piace scrivere tutto per conto loro, alcuni sono molto veloci, altri lenti...

I wouldn't have made anything if that book had not been accepted. And I wouldn't have even handed it over to them if it had not be specifically asked for by the editor. I caught her eye by winning a writing contest. Had she not asked, I would not have ever submitted my work. I was too afraid the rejection would hurt too much.
No one forced me to used a pen name. Italian last names are a trial for people to spell and pronounce in this country. All of my life my name has been butchered. It would not be wise to market myself with it. It would make me hard to find on the shelves, in computers...people would mispell the records (they still do even now with my first name!) So I took an easy name and to honor my father, I took his name since it was his name I was discarding.

Non avrei fatto nulla se quel libro non fosse stato accettato. E non glielo avrei neanche spedito se non mi fosse stato chiesto specificatamente dall'editore. Ho attirato la sua attenzione vincendo un concorso per scrittori. Se lei non me l'avesse chiesto, non avrei neanche sottoposto alla loro attenzione il mio lavoro. Ero troppo impaurita che un rifiuto sarebbe stato troppo doloroso.
Nessuno mi ha costretto ad usare uno pseudonimo. I cognomi italiani sono difficili per le persone da pronunciare e da scrivere in questo paese. Per tutta la mia vita il mio nome è stato storpiato. Non sarebbe stato saggio andare sul mercato con quello. Avrebbe reso difficile trovarmi sugli scaffali, nei motori di ricerca online... le persone avrebbe sbagliato la registrazione (lo fanno anche adesso con il mio nome di battesimo!) Così ho scelto un nome facile e fatto omaggio a mio padre, ho scelto il suo nome dato che era il suo cognome che stavo scartando.

The most difficult task for this paranormal writer is staying fresh and new. I don;t want to be a cheap copy of what others are doing, I want to kick ass with my own ideas and nuances. Yes, I have built my own world. The Nightwalker world. It's actually the way I imagine the world would be if all those supernatural creatures we've ever heard of actually did exist. Of course, being humans we get the facts all wrong and let fear bias us...so there is room for a lot of surprises. And I made these living breathing cultures. The details and the honor codes and the wars are very like our own when it comes down to it. With each book you learn more and more about those worlds. We start with one, slowly see more...and you will always see repeat appearances of the characters from one book to the next and the next because they are a tightly knit circle of friends and relations. So at the end of JAcob you are only saying goodbye for a little while...you'll get to check up on him and his love in the next book.

E' in realtà il modo in cui ho immaginato come sarebbe stato il mondo se tutte quelle creature sovrannaturali di cui abbiamo sentito parlare fossero esistete realmente. Naturalmente, essendo umani abbiamo recepito il tutto nel modo sbagliato e ci siamo spaventati... così c'è spazio per molte sorprese. Ed ho costruito queste culture che vivono ancora. I dettagli e i codici d'onore e le guerre sono molto simili ai nostri quando avvengono. Con ogni libro vieni a conocenza sempre più di questi mondi. Cominciamo con uno, lentamente vedendo di più... e vedrai sempre dei personaggi ricorrenti da un libro al seguente al seguente ancora perchè loro sono uno stretto circolo di amici e parenti. Così alla fine di Jacob stai solo dicendo arrivederci a tra poco... avrai la possibilità di controllare come sta lui e il suo amore nel prossimo libro.

That, in the end, is what so many of us want, I think. So the men in my stories alter to fit my moods but certain things never change. It's always a pleasure to know a new paranormal author. Like you, I love Feehan, Kenyon and Cole, I've never read anything by you, but after reading Jacob plot I'm sure my next shopping will include it :-)
Both Kenyon and Feehan created an entire world, their every book is connected with the others, and characters interacts also in books which are not their own...
Did you create this kind of background too for your books, with its own history?
And if yes, is it inspired to some known legend?
Which is the most difficult challenge, if there is one, for a paranormal writer?

E' sempre un piacere conoscere una nuova autrice di paranormali, come lei amo la Feehan, la Kenyon e la Cole, non ho mai letto nulla di suo, ma dopo aver letto la trama di Jacob, sono certa che i prossimi acquisti lo includeranno :-)
