ROMANCE HISTORY: VIVIAN STEPHENS

Vivian Stephen’s name is mentioned inside every issue of the Romance Writers of America member publication, The Romance Writers Report, under the word, Founder.

Vivian Stephens edited for Harlequin, Dell (Candlelight Romances), Bantam and others. She bought authors such as Sandra Brown and Jayne Ann Krentz off the slush pile.

She established Women Writers of Color with the goal to assist African-Americans to write commercial fiction and get it published. She wanted to see popular fiction with people of color as the major characters, fiction that could break free of stereotypes of how African-Americans are supposed to be and portray African-Americans across the human spectrum.

Stephens pioneered modern American romance for the Harlequin American Romance, Harlequin Intrigue, and Harlequin American Premiere series. She’s responsible for opening the bedroom door and americanizing category romance. Stephens is also the editor responsible for the first modern African-American romance allowed publication at Harlequin books in 1098–Adam and Eva by Sandra Kitt.

In 2000, Beverly Jenkins, the luncheon keynote speaker at the Romance Slam Jam, an annual gathering of black romance authors and readers, suggested recognizing achievement in African American romance with an award named after her former mentor Vivian Stephens, the Vivian Stephens Lifetime Career Achievement Award. The Emma award, to recognize excellence in African-American romance novels, is named after Emma Rodgers, a bookseller and the owner of Black Images Book Bazaar in Dallas who has made tremendous efforts to support African-American romance.

Since Vivian Stephens is not only the founder of RWA but the pioneer of modern category romance and the mentor and educator of many successful novelists and the driving force behind African-American authors and characters finally being allowed into the romance genre, at the 25th annual convention of the organization that she founded, many were shocked and felt slighted to see that Vivian Stephen’s accomplishments were ignored rather than honored. OJ Simpson received more attention.

By 1980, journalist Elsie B. Washington, writing under the pseudonym of Rosalind Welles, published Entwined Destinies. Believed to be the first-known romance featuring African-American characters written by an African-American author, Entwined Destinies was published under the Dell Candlelight imprint with editor Vivian Stephens.

Stephens, one of the first African-American editors of romance fiction, bought the first works of several romance authors whose names now appear regularly on The New York Times best-seller's list. Later, during her tenure with Harlequin, Stephens was credited with updating and "Americanizing" the romance genre. She put into place the framework for the Harlequin American Romance, Harlequin Intrigue and Harlequin American Premier editions. (Gwendolyn Osborne)

(Gwendolyn Osborne)

Vivian Stephens is the founder of the Romance Writers of America and Women Writers of Color. She was an editor for Harlequin, Dell (Candlelight Romances), Bantam and others. She is actually the mother of romances in America. Vivian Stephens pulled people like Sandra Brown off the slush pile and tutored many of today's writers through their first books. She is credited with "opening the bedroom door."

Women Writers of Color is a groups of women who banded together to write commercial fiction with people of color as the major characters, remove the stereotypes from fiction and show how people really live. I belonged to the NY/NJ/DE chapter and we met monthly for two years with Vivian Stephens. I completed two novels in that class and they are both now in print. The group no longer meets regularly, but is still in existence. (Shirley Hailstock)

(Shirley Hailstock)

I scared myself today when I realized that twenty-five years ago this month I received The Call that all writers pray for.

The "I want to buy your book" call that changed my life.

Are you out there, Vivian Stephens? I hope so because I owe you a debt of gratitude that I can never repay. I sent my terribly flawed first book to her and she saw something in it, some little spark that maybe she could fan into something real, and she took a leap of faith and bought it and changed my life forever.

Vivian is a visionary, a groundbreaker, an occasional rabble-rouser, a Muse, the founder of Romance Writers of America, the editor (and this was when romance editors were bigger than rock stars) of Candlelight Ecstasy, Harlequin American Romance, Harlequin Intrigue, a packager, a mentor, an inspiration for so many of us who came of writing age in the early 1980s when the field was wide open, the excitement was high, and the rules had yet to be written. It was a great time to be a writer and (if you'll excuse a cliché) the sky was the limit.

She's the reason why I'm lucky enough to have a book coming out later this month. (Barbara Bretton)

(Barbara Bretton)

A word of advice: when a publisher says they'd let you know in "x" amount of time ... double it! I sent Twilight Dawn off in May, gave up camping out at the post office and called Harlequin in September (and was told that I'd be hearing soon --Ha!). Thanksgiving Day, I got word that Jacki Bianci recommended to novel to Vivian Stephens who was starting the American line. Just before Christmas ... or was it just after? ... I was working the third shift on the phone lines at Swiss Colony and managing Prairie House Apartments by day (while still writing) and had trouble keeping the days straight. Vivian called to say she'd buy the novel if I'd make a few minor changes. I said "YES!!!" and she sent along the changes: "Drop the suspense, add 10,000 words, make the heroine think "... little things, don't you know.. (Alysse Lemery)

Dissi "SI!!!" e lei mi mandò i cambiamenti: "Lascia perdere la suspence, aggiungi 10.000 parole, fai pensare l'eroina"... piccole cose, sapete. (Alysse Lemery)

The best advice I've ever received was from my former agent, Vivian Stephens. She told me: "You have to do the work first. Nothing will come to you if you don't do the work first."  (Beverly Jenkins)

(Beverly Jenkins)

One of the the best writer's conference I have attended was an RWA conference held in 1994 (I believe) at the Marriot Marquis in NYC--where I met my first editor, Monica Harris, who bought my first book, "Sundance." If I had not gone to that conference, I wouldn't have had an opportunity to pitch the book concept and get Monica's agreement to read it, nor would I have met Vivian Stephens (a diva in her own right, founder of RWA, and a dear soul who briefly became my agent and mentor before she retired.) (Leslie Esdaile)

I achieved my impossible dream three years, and many rejections, after I began writing. My first book sale was to Vivian Stephens at Dell Publishing. A few weeks later I received a call from an editor at Leisure Books, with an offer for a manuscript I had previously submitted to other houses…and believed was dead-in-the-publishing-waters, so to speak. The second sale was the first one to be published, in 1979. My first ten books were written longhand at my kitchen table. As I wasn't a typist, I paid one to transcribe my handwritten manuscripts before biting the bullet and going to the typewriter myself to hunt and pick my way through future stories. (Joan Hohl)

(Joan Hohl)

Some people are born to write, some people are called to write like a preacher is called to the Lord. I just wanted to win a dare. After dating disasters and too many unhappily ever after relationships, a friend dared me to write a story. Rising to the challenge I picked up a pen and with the help of Vivian Stephens finished my first novel for BET/Arabesque. (Angela Weaver)

(Angela Weaver)

Ironically, the year that I finished my third manuscript, I saw an article in the New York Times about a woman named Vivian Stephens who was starting a new line of books in New York for Harlequin Enterprise, the world's largest and oldest publisher of romance novels based in Canada. I called Stephens, introduced myself and arranged a meeting.

I knew nothing about publishing, so she gave me a crash course and explained what she was looking for. At the end of meeting she said, 'Why don't you send me two of your three books and let me take a look at them.' So I did and she bought both of them. I sold two books ('Rites of Spring' and 'Adam and Eva') in a matter of a weekwithout the benefit of an agent. (Sandra Kitt)

(Sandra Kitt)

In questi primi post cercherò

Puoi far ricomparire i commenti persi?
