Three years ago we were here together to talk about your latest release "Carina and the Nobleman". Since then, you've come a long way with several new releases. Could you tell us something about those works?
The last year and a half has been crazy for me. I had 4 books released in 2011 and sold 2 others. Book 2 of my medieval psychic sisters trilogy was released. While CARINA was set in Italy, CHARLOTTE AND THE GYPSY is set in Andalusia. I will be working on book 3, CALLIE AND THE KNIGHT, later this year That book is set in England.
The first two books of my Italian medieval series were released last fall. I'll talk about them a little later. LOVE'S SWEET WAGER, a historical western romance, came out last July. For anyone who knows something about American history, the story is set along the California Trail. It's fast-paced and has a hot, very sexy hero!
Tre anni fa ci siamo incontrati quì per parlare del suo ultimo libro “Carina and the Nobleman”. Da allora ha fatto tanta strada, pubblicando diversi romanzi. Potrebbe dirci qualcosa di più sui suoi ultimi lavori?
L’ultimo anno e mezzo per me è stato veramente frenetico. Ho pubblicato quattro romanzi nel 2011 e ne ho venduti altri due. E’ stato pubblicato il secondo libro della trilogia sulle sorelle con i poteri sensitivi. Il primo libro, “CARINA AND THE NOBLEMAN” è ambientato in Italia, mentre il secondo “CHARLOTTE AND THE GYPSY” ha come l’ambientazione la Andalusia. Nella seconda metà di quest’anno comincierò con la scrittura del terzo libro , “CALLIE AND THE KNIGHT”, che sarà ambientato in Inghilterra.
Inoltre, I primi due libri della serie ambientata nella Italia medievale sono stati pubblicati lo scorso autunno. Di loro vi parlerò fra poco. Ho scritto anche un romanzo storico – western, intitolato LOVE'S SWEET WAGER, ed è stato pubblicato nel mese di Luglio 2011. Per coloro che conoscono la storia degli USA, la storia si svolge lungo la Rotta Californiana. E’ una storia dinamica con un eroe molto sexy!
The Italian Medieval series you are working on right now is what interests us in particular. Could you give us a brief insight?
I'd love to.
THE LILY AND THE FALCON, book 1, had been released by Kensington in 2000. It's a re-release with a different publisher now. The year is 1433, and the hero is a Medici, the heroine an Albizzi, from two very opposing families. This story has intrigue and a bit of mystery as well as deception. Cristiano and Bianca overcome major obstacles, including a dark secret Cristiano harbors.
Book 2, SURRENDER TO HONOR, is set in 1440 Palermo where the beginning of the mafia came about. The hero, Antonio, was the stable master in book 1. He returns home after a 15 year absence to find his father dying, lands destroyed, people forced out of their homes, and an insidious Falcone family who is trying to establish themselves as the supreme (unofficial) ruler of Palermo. Prima, the heroine, lives in the forest with the men who were run off their lands and their homes confiscated. She's fighting a battle against the evil Falcone. She also blames Antonio's father for the plight of the people of Palermo. Antonio and Prima had been promised to each other when they were young, and he came home to make good on that promise. Antonio is more of a lover than a fighter and carries no weapons. He believes words can settle conflicts. Prima is a powerhouse, and Antonio is beside himself with trying to turn her into a wife instead of her being the armor-wearing "little warrior" she is.
Book 3, DANTE'S FLAME, will be released in July. The heroine, Alessandra (Alessa), was Bianca's precocious cousin in book 1. It's 1437, Naples, and the French and Spanish are battling to rule the city. Dante is a French tutor and also translates for the French Soldiers. Alessa's father sent her to her cousins in Naples because she got into trouble where she lives in Northern Italy. Dante is a spy for the French, and Alessa's cousins are under suspicion of being Spanish sympathizers. Unfortunately, Alessa seeks adventures and writes illicit tales. She is uncontainable and gets caught in the middle of a political war. Both Dante and Alessa don't know who to trust. There are many humorous scenes in this book due to Alessa's hunger for experiencing life outside the confines of a proper lady.
Book 4, TEMPT NOT MY HEART, is what I'm working on now. This book won't be released until mid- or late 2013. It takes place in 1441 Siena. The hero, Niccolo, is the cousin of Cristiano from book 1. All I can say about this one is the story involves il palio, lies, deceit, greed, and so much more. Sabrina is a different kind of heroine. She's not the petite beauty most heroines are. Her goal is to attend medical school. But that doesn't mean she's not feisty.
I hope I didn't confuse anyone, lol.
La serie ambientata nell’Italia medievale è quella che ci interessa particolarmente. Potrebbe farci una breve introduzione?

LILY AND THE FALCON, il primo libro della serie, è stato pubblicato dalla casa eddittrice Kensington nel 2000. Ora è stato pubblicato per la seconda volta da un’altro editore. L’anno è 1433, e l’eroe è della famiglia Medici, mentre la eroina appartiene alla famiglia Albizzi, due famiglie nemiche, a quell’epoca. La storia contiene un pò di tutto, gli intrighi, misteri e inganni. Cristiano e Bianca dovranno superare dei grandi ostacoli ed anche un segreto oscuro che Cristiano nasconde.
Il secondo libro, SURRENDER TO HONOR, è ambientato nella Palermo del 1440, il luogo dove la mafia avrà le sue origini. Il protagonista , Antonio, era il capo stalliere che ha fatto la sua comparsa nel primo libro. Ora vedremo Antonio ritornare a casa dopo 15 anni di assenza per trovare il suo padre sul letto di morte, le terre distrutte e la gente del vilaggio costretta ad abbandonare le case sotto la pressione della famiglia Falcone che vuole dominare la Palermo. La protagonista, Prima, all’inizio vive nella foresta insieme alla gente fuggita dalle loro terre e dalle loro case le quali sono state confiscate. La sua è una battaglia contro il malvaggio Falcone. Colpevolizza anche il padre di Antonio per ciò che è successo alla gente di Palermo. In più, Antonio e Prima sono stati promessi in matrimonio da piccoli, e ora Antonio torna per mantenere quella promessa. Antonio per non è un guerriero , ma un uomo che preferisce pensare all’amore e cerca di risolvere i conflitti con il dialogo. Prime invece, è una battagliera e Antonio avrà un bel da fare nel convincere Prima di essere una mogle e non una piccola donna – guerriero.
Il terzo libro, DANTE’S FLAME, esce a Luglio. La protagonista, Alessandra (Alessa) è la cuginetta precoce di Bianca, la protagonista del primo libro. Siamo a Napoli e l’anno è 1437. La Francia e la Spagna combattono per la dominazione sulla Napoli. Dante è un insegnante e interprete per i soldati francesi. Alessa è stata mandata a Napoli da suo padre dopo essersi messa nei guai nel paese dove viveva, nell’Italia del nord. Dante è una spia francese, e i cugini di Alessa sono sospettati di essere sostenitori della Spagna. Sfortunattamente, Alessa è un spirito avventuroso e in più, scrive i racconti illeciti. E’ una ragazza sempre in ricerca di nuove sfide e presto si trova nel mezzo di un conflitto politico. Né Dante né Alessa non sanno di chi si possono fidare. Il romanzo è pieno di scene comiche grazie alla insaziablie ricerca di Alessa nel vivere le esperienze della vita fuori dai limiti imposti dalla società.
Il quarto libro, TEMPT NOT MY HEART è ancora in fase di scrittura. Non sarà pubblicato prima della seconda metà del 2013. Sarà ambientato nella città di Siena nell anno 1441. Il protagonista, Niccolò, è il cugino di Cristiano, il protagonista del primo libro. Per ora vi posso solo accennare che la storia avrà molti ingredienti: le menzogne, inganni, avidità, e naturalmente, il Palio. Sabrina è una protagonista diversa dalle solite. Non è la eroina tenera e minuta. E’ una ragazza che vuole studiare la medicina. Ma non significa che non abbia lo spirito.
Spero di non aver creato troppa confusione!
Are the books in this series stand-alones, or they are connected in some way, other then their setting?
The books can be stand-alones. As you saw above, books 2, 3 and 4 are connected to book 1; however, one story is not dependent on another like my psychic sisters trilogy. I do bring back characters from book 1 briefly in the last 3 books. Honestly, it would be best to read them in order, but it's not a necessity.
I libri di questa serie sono collegati in qualche altro modo, oltre alla ambientazione, o si possono leggere indipendentemente?
Si, possono essere letti indipendentemente. Come avevo già menzionato sopra, i libri 2,3 e 4 sono collegati con il primo libro, ma sono le storie separate, non come l’altra saga, sulle tre sorelle medium. Li collega il fatto che ho riportato dei personaggi dal primo libro nelle storie successive. Per questo sarebbe forse, consigliabile, seguire comunque l’ordine di lettura, ma non è obbligatorio.
Medieval Italy is not very often chosen as a setting for a romance novel. What made you choose this country, and, in that particular time period, as your favourite background for your books?
I come from an Italian family, so you might say Italy is in my blood. <g> Placing my stories in Italy seemed the natural thing to do. As a reader, I used to devour romance books, usually reading one every 2 days. I didn't care where they were set. I grew up near Hollywood (California), the movie capitol of the world, and was exposed to many western movies and tv series. So when I started writing, I turned to historical western romances, which I still write on occasion. In the early 1990s, I came up with the idea for the series but was afraid to try writing in the medieval period. Once I began writing, I discovered the words flowed naturally, and I could get deep into the characters' sentiments. I was comfortable writing in that environment.
As for the 15th century, I'm not sure why I chose to write in that period other than a deep-seated connection I cannot explain. I have many more stories planned in that time period and possibly earlier. In fact, a short story set in 1403 Padua will be released at the end of summer or beginning of fall. I don't have the exact date yet. The title is MINE TO KEEP.
L’Italia medievale non è un’ambientazione che le autrici scelgono di frequente nei romanzi rosa. Che cosa le ha fatto scegliere l’Italia e poi in quel particolare periodo storico come lo sfondo preferito per i suoi romanzi?
Le mie origini sono italiane, perciò posso dire che ho l’Italia nel sangue. Per me, ambientarci i miei romanzi, è stata una scelta naturale. Come lettrice divoravo tutti i romanzi rosa, uno ogni due giorni, e non mi importava la ambientazione. Sono cresciuta vicino alla Hollywood in California, la capitale mondiale del cinema e il contatto più vicino è stato con i film western. In fatti, quando ho cominciato a scrivere, i miei primi romanzi erano proprio i western. Ancora oggi ritorno a scrivere qualche romanzo ambientato in questo periodo. Nei primi anni ’90, è nata l’idea di scrivere una serie dei romanzi ambientati nel medioevo, ma avevo qualche timore al riguardo. Comunque, una volta cominciato la scrittura, è diventato tutto molto più facile e mi veniva come una cosa naturale descrivere quel periodo e immedesimarmi con i personaggi. Mi sentivo a mio agio in quel ambiente.
Quanto al XV-esimo secolo, non so esattamente cosa mi abbia fatto scegliere proprio quell periodo storico, tranne un inspiegabile collegamento che sento nel mio profondo. Ho ancora tanti romanzi che intendo ambientare in quel periodo o ancora prima. In fatti, una storia breve, ambientata nella Padova, nell’anno 1403., uscirà a fine estate o inizio autunno. Non ho ancora la data precisa. Il titolo sarà MINE TO KEEP.
What is your current connection with Italy?
I'm first generation in America. My mom was Sicilian, and my father was born on Ponza. I don't have family around me anymore, but I keep connected with Italy and Italians through the Sons of Italy in America organization. They've made my Czech husband an honorary Italian, lol. The music I listen to is primarily by Italian artists or they are Italian songs by such artists as Il Divo.
Quale è il suo collegamento attuale con l’Italia?
Io appartengo alla prima generazione degli italiani nati in America. Mia madre era siciliana, e mio padre era nato sull’isola di Ponza. Non ho più la mia famiglia vicino a me, ma mantengo il collegamento con l’Italia e gli italiani tramite la organizzazione Sons of Italy in America (Figli d’Italia in America). Hanno dato la cittadinanza onoraria anche al mio marito, che è di origine Ceca! Ascolto sopratutto la musica italiana o le canzoni italiane cantate dai cantanti come Il Divo.
Have you had the chance to visit the places of your origins?
Sadly, I have not. In 1970 I visited my uncle, who was a General in the Italian Air Force at the time. He lived in a government compound on the outskirts of Rome. I was 18 and stayed nearly 2 months. Over the years, I have developed a fear of flying. After 9/11, that fear escalated. Unless my husband drugs me and knocks me out, I'll never get on an airplane again. :-)
Ha avuto la possibilità di visitare I luoghi d’origine della sua famiglia?
Sfortunattamente, no. Nel 1970, da diciotenne ho visitato un mio zio che era in quei tempi un Generale della Aeronautica Militare e viveva in un complesso militare alla periferia di Roma. La mia visita è durata quasi due mesi. Con passare degli anni la mia paura di volare si è sviluppata sempre di più, e dopo l’11 Settembre, si è aggravata maggiormente. L’unico modo per farmi ora salire sul aereo sarebbe se il mio marito mi desse un forte sedativo e un colpo in testa.
Do you follow the Italian current life in some way?
A.C. Milan, Roma. The Azzurri. Do you see a theme here, lol? Other than soccer, I read up on current events in Italy when I have the time, but it's difficult with writing and tending to life in general, especially my grandchildren and 3 Rat Terriers (dogs). I used to receive an Italian newspaper about 30 years ago. I've been married 40 years and away from family for that time, so I've forgotten how to speak. I'm afraid my Italian these days is at a 3 year-old's level.
Segue in qualche modo l'attualità italiana?
A.C.Milan; F.C. Roma; Gli Azzurri. Si nota il collegamento? Oltre il calcio, quando ho il tempo, leggo su quello che accade in Italia, ma è difficile, insieme agli impegni di ogni giorno, la scrittura, e specialmente i miei nipoti e i miei tre cani ( tre rat terrier). Una trentina di anni fa ricevevo regolarmente un giornale italiano. Sono sposata da 40 anni ed è da altrettanto che sto lontano dalla mia famiglia d’origine, e per questo ho dimenticato la lingua. Temo che il mio italiano d’oggi è al livello di un bambino di tre anni.
A curiosity I just have to satisfy: An Italian macho man is an image well known (and often exaggerated). Does it still persist as a stereotype, out of Italy? Has it, and if yes in which measure , influenced the creation of your male characters?
Other than tall, dark, handsome and hot.... Lol, that's my view of Italian men, even if it's imaginary. Americans view Italian men as macho but suave, and definitely romantic and hot lovers. It's unfortunate that reality shows like Jersey Shore are giving Americans the wrong impression of Italian men. Americans also associate Italians men with the mafia, a fact the Sons of Italy organization is trying to dispel. None of that has influenced my writing. My characters are based on first hand knowledge of the Italian male's perspective. Growing up Italian has given me genuine insight to the lifestyle and behavior of Italian men, women and children.
Una curiosità che devo soddisfare: l’immagine macho degli uomini italiani è ben conosciuta (e spesso esagerata). Persiste ancora come immagine stereotipata fuori dall’Italia? Ha influenzato e se sì, in quale misura la formazione dei personaggi maschili nei suoi romanzi?
Oltre all’alto, scuro, affascinante e hot…..beh quella è la mia visione degli uomini italiani, anche se immaginaria. Le ammericane vedono gli uomini italiani come macho sì, ma molto gentili, e definitivamente come amanti romantici e bollenti. Sfortunatamente esistono dei Reality Show negli USA, come Jersey Shore, che danno una visione sbagliata sugli italiani. In più gli americani collegano gli italiani con la mafia, un luogo comune che la organizazzione Sons of Italy sta cercando di abbattere. Niente di tutto ciò ha influenzato la mia scrittura. I miei personaggi sono creati sulle basi delle conoscenze di prima persona, sui modi e punti di vista di un uomo italiano. Crescere in una famiglia italiana mi ha dato la possibilità di conoscere il vero stile di vita ed il comportamento delle donne, uomini e bambini italiani.

Alessandra Podesta scrive le storie di contenuto licenzioso, una cosa inaccettabile per una giovane donna del suo rango. Esasperato, suo padre la manda in visita dai cugini a Napoli, con la speranza di domarla. Ma, con la sua insaziablie voglia di avventura, la ragazza comincia a gioccare con l’affetto del suo tutore, causando inevitabilmente di essere costretta a sposarlo. Antonio ordered Prima thrown into the dungeon. In this scene, he goes down to release her from the rack where he had previously secured her wrists and ankles.
“If you confess, you will find yourself free before nightfall.”
“I have naught to confess.” She lifted her chin and met his gaze.
“You attacked me. By what reason did you greet me with unfriendly intentions?”
“I thought you were a…thief, looking to prey on the innocent women weeping for their dead.”
“Liar.”
She glared up at him.
“You had no other reason than to seek revenge on the Massaro and the Falcone. You thought I came, summoned to Palermo by one of those families, another man willing to join forces with powerful foes.”
“Was it not I who you bade to confess? Alas, since you have spoken my truth, as I already did after you captured me, am I free to leave?”
Antonio forced back a grin caused by her saucy remark. “Clever, piccola.” He pulled open the cuffs at her wrists anyway, ignoring the shock spanning her features. “They were never locked,” he admitted, watching her shock turn to seething hatred.
She sat up, rubbing her wrists. He scooped her surcoat from the rushes and sat down beside her legs on the raised rack. When he took her hand in his, she snatched it away.
“I mean only to tend your cuts,” he said.
“I shall see to them myself.” Prima tugged her surcoat out of his hand. “The ankle cuffs?”
Antonio glanced back at her wiggling feet, all the while aware that her eyes were on the leather tie holding his long hair in place. It was uncommon for a man of wealth and honor to wear his hair below his jaw; he didn’t care. He turned then and caught her staring. The ill-lit dungeon did not conceal the warm flush unfolding up her cheeks.
“It appears we are in a small quandary. The ankle cuffs are locked, and I have not the key.” He rose to search the dungeon. He picked up an axe and curled his fingers around the leather wrapped handle. From the corner of his eye he watched Prima as he raised the old weapon to his lips and blew the dust free. When he cleaved the table with the sharp blade, Prima gasped. “This should do, I think,” he said.
“Wh-what are you about?” Her eyes widened as he raised the weapon high above his head. “What—? Dio!” She clasped her hands behind her neck and pulled her head between her knees. The chains jerked her ankles and her legs slammed together, snapping against her ears. He knew of no easier way to rid her of the chains. One final blow freed her completely. She raised her head, rubbing her ears, and shook herself of the gypsy bells undoubtedly tinkling within. She touched her hair, felt her neck, and exhaled loudly.
Astonished, Antonio asked, “Think you I would take your head?”
She boldly met his gaze. “Sì.”
Antonio aveva ordinato che Prima fosse gettata nella cella sotterranea. In questa scena lui scende per liberarla dalla ruota alla quale aveva assicurato in precedenza i polsi e caviglie della donna.
" Se confessi, sarai libera prima dell'imbrunire"
" Non ho niente da confessare" Sollevò il mento per incontrare il suo sguardo.
" Mi hai attaccato. Per quale ragione mi hai accolto con intenzioni così poco amichevoli?"
" Credevo fossi un...ladro, con l’intento di depredare le donne innocenti intente a piangere i loro morti"

Fissò lo sguardo su di lui.
“ Non hai alcun motivo per cercare di vendicarti su Massaro e Falcone. Hai pensato che io fossi venuto, chiamato a Palermo da uno di quelle famiglie, che fossi un altro uomo disposto a unire le forze con rivali potenti”
“ Non è a me che hai ordinato di confessare? Purtroppo, dal momento che hai detto la verità, come io avevo già fatto dopo che mi hai catturato, non sono libera di andarmene?”
Antonio trattenne un sorriso causato dal suo commento impertinente “ Sei intelligente, piccola”.Aprì ad ogni modo le manette ai polsi, ignorando lo shock che le attraversò i lineamenti. “Non erano mai state veramente chiuse” ammise, osservando come il suo shock si tramutava in odio ribollente.
Lei si alzò, massaggiandosi i polsi. Egli raccolse il suo soprabito dai ganci e si sedette accanto alle sue gambe, sulla ruota sollevata. Quando prese la sua mano nelle sue, lei gliela strappò via
“ Voglio solo prendermi cura dei tuoi tagli” disse.
“ Faccio da sola”. Prima strattonò il suo soprabito dalle sue mani. “ Le manette per le caviglie?”
Antonio guardò i suoi piedi che si dimenavano mentre era consapevole che gli occhi di lei erano fissi sul laccio di pelle che teneva a posto i suoi capelli. Era raro che un uomo ricco e onorevole portasse i capelli lunghi oltre la mascella, a lui non importava. Si girò e incontrò il suo sguardo. Il sotterraneo male illuminato non nascondeva il calore diffuso sulle guance della donna.
“ Sembra che abbiamo un piccolo dilemma. Le manette per le caviglie sono chiuse e io non ho la chiave” Si alzò per ispezionare il sotterraneo. Raccolse un’ascia e serrò le dita intorno al manico ricoperto di pelle. Con la coda dell’occhio vide Prima mentre lui sollevava il vecchio arnese e soffiava via la polvere. Quando tagliò il tavolo con la lama affilata, Prima ansimò. “ Questo dovrebbe andare, penso” egli disse.
“ Co- Cosa fai?” Gli occhi di lei si spalancarono mentre lui sollevava l’arma oltre la sua testa “ Cosa? Dio!” Strinse le mani dietro la nuca e tirò la testa fra le ginocchia. Le catene strattonarono le sue caviglie e le gambe facendole sbattere , poi scattarono verso le sue orecchie. Egli sapeva di non avere altro modo per sbarazzarsi delle catene. Un ultimo colpo e lei fu libera completamente. Sollevò la testa massaggiandosi le orecchie e si scosse dalle campanelle da zingara che tintinnavano.
Si toccò la testa, sentì il collo ed espirò ad alta voce.
Stupito Antonio chiese: “ Pensavi avrei preso la tua testa?”
Lei incontrò coraggiosamente il suo sguardo: “ Si”

You'll have to excuse my poor attempt to read Italian. It's been a long time! I'm glad you thought the interview was interesting. And I'm happy that you got a laugh at how Americans view Ialian men. I think you said you are intrigued by the period of my stories. American editors and agents do not care for Italian medievals. When I wrote the first two books in the series back in the 1990s, editors believed that no one would be interested in reading medievals set outside of England, Ireland or Scotland. It's sad that most editors still think that way. Thank you so much for reading the interview.

Dragan wrote beautiful questions that had to do with my Italian heritage. She is a wonderful interviewer. I am so honored that you remember me. (I hope that is what you said!) There are many more towns in Italy that I plan to use in future historical romances. My August release, a short story, takes place in 1405 Padua. The title is MINE TO KEEP. There is indeed so much more in Italy's celebrated history that I have yet to write about. Future books that I have been making notes on will be set in Genoa, Ponza, San Gimignano, and Rome. I am certain that list will get longer! Thank you for commenting.

I do hope my books will eventually be translated into Italian so you can read them. I have had books translated into Dutch and Portuguese. But the ones I would treasure the most would be the books in Italian. If I am understanding you correctly, you said you would sign an online petition to get my books into Italian. That is so very nice of you. But if it were that easy, I would have done it long ago. The decision is up to my publishers. molto grazie
